Today we're excited to chat with Erin Summerill (Ever The Brave)
as part of YABC's Teen Read Week!
Read on for more about Erin, her novel, plus a giveaway!
Meet Erin Summerill!
Erin Summerill was born in England. After spending years bouncing between Air Force bases in Hawaii, England, and California, her family settled in Utah, where Erin graduated with a B.A. in English from Brigham Young University. She had aspirations to write the next great American novel, but writing proved tougher than she first thought. So she grabbed a Nikon and became a professional photographer while crafting manuscript after manuscript. The scenic detour of shooting weddings across the United States, as well as internationally, provided world-building inspiration. It gave her the vision to draft her debut YA fantasy, EVER THE HUNTED. Now when she isn’t writing, or shooting a wedding, she’s chasing her four kids, two dogs, one cat, and five chickens. This could be why she downs massive amounts of Coke Zero and Hot tamales.

~ Interview for Teen Read Week ~
YABC: What book or books were your go-to choice when you were a teen?
I loved anything written by Robin McKinley. She is my author icon for fantasy. I loved her strong female characters and fully realized worlds with vibrant settings. Her words were also poetic and inspiring. I could get lost in her pages any day.
YABC: What current YA book would you recommend to your teenage self?
Gah! This is a hard one. I read so many YA books and I love them all. Can I pick more than one? I would tell myself to read, The Crown's Game by Evelyn Skye because it's awesome. But then I would also encourage myself to read outside of the fantasy genre and pick up the adorable and engaging contemporary, Tell Me Three Things by Juile Buxbaum. Seriously, it's so good.
YABC: What advice would you give teens who might want to be a writer?
Do it. Pick up a pen or pull out a keyboard and start writing. One thing that weighs you down as you get older are doubts. It seems each year I grow older, I have more doubts and worries about my future and my capabilities. But when I was a teen, the future felt limitless. And that is because it is! You can literally do anything you want. If you believe you can do it, you can. Yeah, your first draft might have some kinks. But everyone's does. So just write it. You're living the YA story right now, so there is no one better to write it than you.
