Today we're excited to chat with Elly Blake (Fireblood)

as part of YABC's Teen Read Week!

Read on for more about Elly, her novel, plus a giveaway!

Meet Elly Blake!

Elly Blake is the NYT bestselling author of FROSTBLOOD. After earning a BA in English literature, she held a series of seemingly random jobs, including project manager, customs clerk, graphic designer, reporter for a local business magazine, and library assistant. She lives in Southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids and a Siberian Husky mix who definitely shows Frostblood tendencies.

Meet Fireblood!

In this action-packed sequel to the New York Times bestselling Frostblood, Ruby must choose between her fiery homeland and the icy king who loves her.

Against all odds, Ruby has defeated the villainous Frost King and melted his powerful throne. But the bloodthirsty Minax that was trapped inside is now haunting her kingdom and everyone she loves. The answers to its demise may lie to the south in Sudesia, the land of the Firebloods, and a country that holds the secrets to Ruby's powers and past....

Despite warnings from her beloved Arcus, Ruby accompanies a roguish Fireblood named Kai to Sudesia, where she must master her control of fire in a series of trials to gain the trust of the suspicious Fireblood queen. Only then can she hope to access the knowledge that could defeat the rampaging Minax--which grows closer every moment. But as sparks fly in her moments alone with Kai, how can Ruby decide whom to trust? The fate of both kingdoms is now in her hands.

~ Interview for Teen Read Week ~

YABC:  What book or books were your go-to choice when you were a teen?

In my pre-teen years, I read a lot of fantasy, but as a teen, I read a bit of everything. Romance was the genre I returned to time and time again.

YABC:  Did you prefer a specific genre as a teen? Or was any genre game?

I read a mixture of romance, fantasy, cozy mysteries, classics, and a bit of contemporary and sci fi. Some of my favorite books were Jane Eyre, Pride & Prejudice, Anna Karenina, The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley, Black Unicorn by Tanith Lee, and The Pigman by Paul Zindel.

YABC:  What do you love most about the YA genre?

I love that the YA genre isn't really a genre, but rather an umbrella that covers all genres. Within YA, you find fantasy, historical, sci fi, contemporary, romance, mystery, thriller, dystopian, post-apocalyptic, magical realism, paranormal, graphic novels, etc. The books are written for teens, but are enjoyed by people of all ages because YA books often have more concise writing and tighter pacing than adult novels. Those are things readers of all kinds appreciate.

YABC:  Was there a class in high school that you wished you had paid closer attention to and why?

I wish I'd paid more attention in history class, and in fact, I wish I had taken history courses in University. While writing fantasy, I'm always trying to draw on elements of the past, and it would be nice to have a better foundation in, say, military history and every day life in the middle ages and after.

YABC:  What advice would you give teens who might want to be a writer?

To anyone who wants to be a writer, I just want to tell you that you have so much more potential than you can possibly know. Please don't judge your talent based on early efforts. Keep writing, keep honing that gift, and give yourself permission to fail. It's a rocky road, but it's also so rewarding and you'll meet such amazing people! Keep reading and keep writing!

Some of my favorite books as teen were from the Sunfire Romance series, an older series of books that I would find at used bookstores.
