Teen Read Week 2017: Author Chat with Dave Connis (The Temptation Of Adam), Plus Giveaway!

TTOASM

Today we're excited to chat with Dave Connis (The Temptation Of Adam)

as part of YABC's Teen Read Week!

Read on for more about Dave, his novel, plus a giveaway!

Meet Dave Connis!

Iwrite words you can sing and words you can read. I live in Chattanooga, TN with my wife, Clara and a dog that barks at non-existent threats.

When I'm not writing YA or MG, I'm probably working really strange part-time jobs, and doing other things that actually give my family the ability to eat food. I'm a member the Jedi Counsel, and I have a propensity to daydream when ever I attempt to be an adult.

Four truths and one lie:

1. I once built a raft with friends and rafted down a river for a week
2. The first story I wrote was autobiographical X-Men fan fiction which culminated with me kissing Rogue, naturally.
3. If alligator or goat is on a restaurant/cafe menu I will order it.
4. I tried out to be a drummer for the Blue Man Group when I was 16.
5. I camped on the shore of the frozen Canadian wasteland of Hudson Bay in -32 degree weather.

Meet The Temptation Of Adam!

Adam Hawthorne is fine.

Yeah, his mother left, his older sister went with her, and his dad would rather read Nicholas Sparks novels than talk to him. And yeah, he spends his nights watching self-curated porn video playlists.

But Adam is fine.

When a family friend discovers Adam’s porn addiction, he’s forced to join an addiction support group: the self-proclaimed Knights of Vice. He goes because he has to, but the honesty of the Knights starts to slip past his defenses. Combine that with his sister’s out-of-the-blue return and the attention of a girl he meets in an AA meeting, and all the work Adam has put into being fine begins to unravel.

Now Adam has to face the causes and effects of his addiction, before he loses his new friends, his prodigal sister, and his almost semi-sort-of girlfriend.

~ Interview for Teen Read Week ~

YABC:  What current YA book would you recommend to your teenage self?

Winger by Andrew Smith because it'll make younger Dave realize that contemporary YA is freaking fantastic and it'd totally help the quality of his X-Men fan fic.

YABC:  Was there a class in high school that you wished you had paid closer attention to and why?

I wish I'd paid more attention to High school. Like, all the classes. I didn't really understand what the point of knowing all the stuff I was learning was. It was just something I had to do. Now I wish I knew so much more than I do.

YABC:  What advice would you give teens who might want to be a writer.

Don't feel dumb. I always felt like I had to hide that I was writing X-Men fanfic. I just assumed that people wouldn't understand my nerd-ness. Maybe they won't, that's fine, but just like what you like and like it hard. You don't have to have reasons for liking things a lot. Like wildly. Write wildly.

YABC:  What book from your younger years do you still recommend today?

Holes by Louis Sachar. It's such a good book. Before it was practically built in that books got movies, Holes got a movie. Why? Because it's so freaking good. You know what. I'm going to go read it again. Right now.
