Meet Obert Skye!

Obert Skye is not who you think he is -- unless you think he's a best-selling author of over thirty books. Also, if you think he's not great at whistling, or that he's discovered cures, or that he once broke his collarbone while walking, then he's exactly who you think he is, and you're psychic. Among the books he's written are the Leven Thumps series, The Pillagy, The Creature from My Closet, Mutant Bunny Island, and Geeked Out. Among the cures he's discovered are the cure for boredom, a cure for ignorance, and a half-decent recipe for the curing of a ham. Obert is also a presenter and champion of both words and paper. If you have time on your hands you might look in on some of the other things he's done at obertskye.com. If you're out of time, then take comfort in the fact that you spent your last few moments reading something worthwhile.

Meet Wizard For Hire: Magic Required!

At the Convent of Sweet Mercy, young girls are raised to be killers. In some few children the old bloods show, gifting rare talents that can be honed to deadly or mystic effect. But even the mistresses of sword and shadow don’t truly understand what they have purchased when Nona Grey is brought to their halls.

A bloodstained child of nine falsely accused of murder, guilty of worse, Nona is stolen from the shadow of the noose. It takes ten years to educate a Red Sister in the ways of blade and fist, but under Abbess Glass’s care there is much more to learn than the arts of death. Among her class Nona finds a new family—and new enemies.

Despite the security and isolation of the convent, Nona’s secret and violent past finds her out, drawing with it the tangled politics of a crumbling empire. Her arrival sparks old feuds to life, igniting vicious struggles within the church and even drawing the eye of the emperor himself.

Beneath a dying sun, Nona Grey must master her inner demons, then loose them on those who stand in her way.

Cover Up

By Obert Skye

What’s the deal with books? They all look similar, but there are often subtle, obvious, or massive differences.

I can’t say what look I like best.

I was taught not to judge a book by its cover, but sometimes I do. Chances are if the cover is a picture of someone doing their taxes, I’m going to judge it, and then walk on by.  If the cover is nothing but a mushroom with a lavender background, I’m not even going to take the time to judge it.  That’s not to say that I haven’t read an occasional book that didn’t bring on love at first glance. I’d list a few of those underwhelming books, but that might make the author mad.

My favorite books are the ones without covers—the ones that are missing their dust jackets and well worn due to multiple readings. I have a copy of Holes that is so used it’s now decrepit. My copy of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is covered in tape and string. Long Way From Chicago is a long way from pristine. Frankenstein is a monster. The Giver has given up.

Sometimes I like reading books without covers so that the insides are a complete surprise. I’m able to imagine things just as I see them.

Sure, some covers are seductive and alluring. Some cause you to hold the book and gently brush the cover. Some covers live up to the hype, but sometimes an attractive cover turns out to be a pile of…well, they end up in a pile of someone else’s books.

The point of all this is that I’m pretty happy with the covers of Wizard For Hire.  But if it’s better for you to close your eyes until you’ve cracked the spine and begun to read, then I get it.
