Her debut book, Light Filters In, released in 2018, and she was named one of Her Campus’s 22 Under 22 Most Inspiring College Women in 2018 for her work destigmatizing mental illness through poetry. When she’s not writing, she can be found eating pad thai, harmonizing with the radio, and refusing to believe she’s growing up.
Meet When The World Didnt End: Poems!
Teen Instagram sensation and author of Light Filters In @poeticpoison returns with a second collection of short, powerful poems about love, forgiveness, self-discovery, and what it’s like living after a hard-fought battle with depression, in the vein of poetry collections like Milk and Honey and the princess saves herself in this one.
In her second book of poetry, Instagram sensation Caroline Kaufman—known as @poeticpoison—explores the shock, wonder, and beauty of an uncertain future.
When the World Didn’t End is a vivid account of trying to find a path forward while reckoning with the pain of the past, embracing imperfection, and unlearning the language of self-criticism.
It’s an ode to the awkward silence between goodbye and hanging up, to hearts that continue to beat after they’re broken, to the empty spaces that depression leaves behind. With vulnerability and insight, this powerful collection of short poems holds up a mirror to the doubt and longing inside us all.
This collection features completely new material plus some fan favorites from Caroline’s account. Filled with haunting, spare pieces of original art, When the World Didn’t End will thrill existing fans and newcomers alike.
how will you make the most of it?
how will you live the life you never thought you’d get the chance to see?
~ Excerpt ~
I don’t think
I will ever be satisfied with all that I’ve done.
I do not see this life
as something you can complete. I do not see this journey
as one that has an ending.
it is hard to be proud
of how far you’ve come
when there will always be miles and miles ahead of you.
I’m not sure who to be anymore.
when depression found me
it dug holes into my body.
it shoveled me out like dirt
and filled in all the empty spaces.
after learning how to stop drowning from the inside out; now,
after pulling out all the poison; now,
after years and years of draining I find myself free,
there is more hollowed space
than person inside of me.
the depression may be gone, but it took me along with it.
well, you made it.
the unbearable weight suddenly lifted. the endless night broke into dawn. the uphill battle led you to a peak, and now you stand tall at the summit.
what do you do next?
there is now air to breathe and room to grow and time to fill and you did not plan for this, you did not plan on having a life worth living. and suddenly, there it is.
how will you make the most of it?
how will you live the life
you never thought you’d get the chance to see?
bright are the hearts that long for a piece
that perfectly fits next to their own.
brave are the hearts that chase after love
when the consequences still are unknown.
strong are the hearts that continue to beat
when they’re broken and falling apart.
so if you wish to be bright, or brave, or strong,
it’s simple—just follow your heart.
