Screen-Shot-2018-05-17-at-10.34.25-AM

Today we're excited to spotlight When the Beat Drops by Anna Hecker! Read on for more about Anna and her book, plus a playlist & giveaway!

Meet Anna Hecker!

Anna Hecker grew up at the dead end of a dirt road in Vermont. She holds an MFA from The New School and spent a decade writing ad copy and

chasing beats before returning to fiction, her first love. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband, son, and fluffy bundle of glamor, Cat Benatar. Follow her @HeckerBooks on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Meet When the Beat Drops!

Seventeen-year-old Mira has always danced to her own beat. A music prodigy in a family of athletes, she'd rather play trumpet than play ball--and with her audition to a prestigious jazz conservatory just around the corner (and her two best friends at music camp without her), she plans to spend the summer focused on jazz and nothing else.
  1. She only goes to the warehouse party in a last-ditch effort to bond with her older sister. Instead, she falls in love with dance music, DJing...and Derek, a gorgeous promoter who thinks he can make her a star. Suddenly trumpet practice and old friendships are taking a backseat to packed dance floors and sun-soaked music festivals, outsized personalities and endless beats.

But when a devastating tragedy plunges her golden summer into darkness, Mira discovers just how little she knows about her new boyfriend, her old friends, and even her own sister. The music brought them together. But will it also tear them apart?

A Top 10 Playlist for WHEN THE BEAT DROPS

This (mostly) electronic playlist follows Mira’s journey as a musician, DJ, sister, girlfriend, and friend. Like her story, it hits some beautiful highs and very intense lows. I hope you love listening to it as much as I loved making it for you!

1. SO WHAT, by Miles Davis

At the opening of the book, Mira is a huge jazz nerd: she lives to play trumpet and compose original pieces. Her hero is Miles Davis, so naturally the first song on this playlist is SO WHAT, the first song on Mira’s favorite album, KIND OF BLUE.

2. ALRIGHT, by Influx Datum

Mira’s world changes when her older sister drags her to a warehouse party in Brooklyn. She feels like a fish out of water, but falls in love with the music, which she says: “stops me in my tracks, vibrating into my feet and radiating up my legs, pumping my heart and pulsing blood through my veins.” I always pictured the music in this passage as complex, melodic drum-and-bass, like this gorgeous track by Influx Datum.

3. GHETTOWERK, by DivaDanielle

Mira’s life changes when she meets DJ Shay, who becomes her good friend and mentor on the decks. Fun fact: DJ Shay was inspired by my real-life friend DivaDanielle, a powerhouse DJ, producer, and magical unicorn. She wrote this fun, upbeat house track that always gets people on the dance floor.

4. THROW IT BACK, by Curtis B

As Mira starts to explore more genres, I could totally see her falling in love with the multi-layered beat, fun samples, and world music influences in this breaks track by Curtis B. It’s just fun!

5. WORK THAT, by Anna Morgan

Then she’d go even deeper with this banger by one of my NYC local favorites, Anna Morgan. I dare you not to bounce in your seat to this one.

6. MUSIC SOUNDS BETTER WITH YOU, by Stardust

This classic house track was always playing in the back of my mind when I wrote Mira’s romantic scenes with Derek. It’s also one of the first house tracks I ever fell in love with!

7. SIERRA LEONE, by Agent K & Bella (Alexis K Remix)

At times, WHEN THE BEAT DROPS goes pretty dark. So does this haunting dubstep remix by formidable producer, Alexis K.

8. YOU USED TO ROCK, by Blue Six

Toward the end of the book, things start to really fall apart for Mira. I could totally see her curling up to this heart-achey, downtempo house track by one of my favorite groups, Blue Six. It’s summery, but also sad.

9. ALABAMA BLUES, by St. Germaine

Now that you’re thoroughly bummed out, cheer up with this house classic by French producer St. Germain, with vocals by the legendary Todd Edwards. It’s what Mira would do!

10. IT’S A JAZZ THING, by Roni Size

Is there room for both jazz and dance music in Mira’s life? There certainly is in this amazing jazz/jungle mash-up by Roni Size! It’s basically WHEN THE BEAT DROPS in a single track.
