Meet Megan McCafferty!

  

Megan McCafferty writes fiction for tweens, teens and teens-at-heart of all ages. The author of several novels, she’s best known for Sloppy Firsts and several more books in the New York Times bestselling Jessica Darling series. Meet The Mall!

            Mixtapes are a lost art form. Don’t get me wrong, I love a well-curated online playlist. But the minimal effort required to pull together a few dozen songs on Spotify simply cannot compare to the painstakingly edited cassette masterpieces of my youth. It was an era when the perfect songs in the perfect order could express all the intense and often contradictory emotions a confused 17-year-old girl could not.

            When I decided to set my new YA novel THE MALL in the summer of 1991, I knew Cassie Worthy had to make a mixtape. Especially when she develops a summer crush on “Sam Goody,” aptly nicknamed for his employment at a music store. Here are the songs I imagine my Barnard-bound protagonist picked. Curious why?
