Meet Christine Fonseca!


Christine Fonseca is dedicated to helping children and adults find their unique voice in the world. Christine worked as a school psychologist in the elementary, middle, and high school levels for more than 17 years. Currently, she works as a consultant helping school districts support the behavioral and social-emotional needs of students. She also coaches children and parents to work through their anxieties and is the parent of two young adult daughters.

Stress. It’s a familiar feeling in our modern world. But what does it mean to be stressed? Typically defined as physical, mental or emotional tension, stress is the result of factors, both environmental and internal, that can overwhelm our coping systems. Stress is identified as a causal factor in physical disease, mental health problems, and performance problems. In short, stress is often considered a bad thing.

Not all stress is harmful, however. In small doses, stress can be a great motivator for change, alerting us that something is out of balance in our lives. It can provide the push we need during periods of competition. It can aid our focus during tests and can cause us to reach out to others for comfort. In short, stress by itself isn't a problem. Too much stress, often referred to as anxiety, is the problem.

Anxiety occurs when our stress response becomes maladaptive and causes us significant discomfort. Learning to manage stress before it morphs into paralyzing anxiety is essential in today's world. The following list includes a variety of ways to handle stress before it overwhelms you:

  •   Practice healthy lifestyle choices.

  • Engaging in a healthy lifestyle, including proper nutrition and hydration, adequate sleep, and time for exercise, play, and relaxation, is one of the best ways to set the stage for balance in your life.

  •   Create a calm space just for you.

  • Everyone needs a place of their own, somewhere they can relax and just “be”. It is important to establish a calm spot, in your room or anywhere you can. Use this area daily to add more balance to your life.

  •   Practice relaxation daily.

  • Learn the art of relaxation by practicing techniques like deep breathing, meditation, yoga, or taking mental vacations.

  •   Communicate effectively.

  • Make it a priority to develop strong communication skills and excellent conflict resolution skills. Often, stress comes as a result of conflict with peers and adults or a lack of self-advocacy skills. Learning how to communicate effectively in all situations can result in significantly reducing stressful situations.

  •   Exercise appropriate boundaries.

  • It is never a good thing to take on the weight of the world’s problems. Learning how to set limits, as well as learning how to discern things you can change and influence, from things you cannot change or influence can go a long way to helping with stress.

  •   Redefine stress.

  • Modern research in the field of neuroscience and psychology teaches us that how we think about things determines how we act. When you view stress as harmful, you increase the negative impact of stress on the mind and body. Similarly, when you see stress as beneficial, you are no longer impacted by the adverse effect of your stress response system. In fact, you are better able to reap the positive benefits of stress.

Learn to R.O.A.R..

Few things are more effective when you are caught in the throes of anxiety and extreme stress than learning the principles of R.O.A.R. Relax your thoughts with a few deep breaths, orient yourself to the present moment, attune to your immediate needs, and release your resistance to your feelings. R.O.A.R and regain a sense of calm.

Stress doesn’t have to be an inherently bad thing in your life. But, you have to change your feelings about stress and engage in healthy lifestyle choices if you are going to keep stress and anxiety from overwhelming you. Practice a few of these stress buster ideas any time you feel yourself becoming overwhelmed. You may be surprised how easy it can be to take control of your stress and anxiety and regain a sense of calm. Take time to listen to the message mild forms of stress are trying to tell you. And if you find parts of your life are overwhelming to you, take time to try to establish some balance.
