Meet Filigree's Midnight Ride!

Join Filigree, a five-pound Pomeranian, as he stows away on Paul Revere’s midnight ride in this first book of the At the Heels of History series, inspired by important events and told through the eyes, ears, and noses of dogs.

Filigree may be a small puff of a Pomeranian but he has a big, brave heart. As the Revere family dog, he’s ready to do his part to help the American colonists stand up to the British soldiers. But the other dogs, like Jove, Sam Adams’s Newfoundland, and even the Revere cat, Anvil, think Filigree is a joke. The Reveres’ daughter Frances is the only one who believes in him.

When Frances’s father, Paul Revere, leaves home on a secret mission, Filigree and Frances know they have to help, no matter how dangerous it might be. Will a pint-sized pup just be in the way, or can Filigree prove that even a very small dog can fight for freedom?

The 5 Most Interesting Facts We Learned While Researching Filigree’s Midnight Ride (Book 1, At the Heels of History)

When we started writing Filigree’s Midnight Ride, we had heard the story in the famous poem Paul Revere’s Ride, by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. But we didn’t realize how different the poem was from the real story. And we had a lot of questions about Pomeranians! Here are five things that surprised us about the Midnight Ride and Pomeranians that we found out while we were researching the book.

  1. Paul Revere wasn’t the only rider out that night warning the Patriots. A network of dozens of riders traveled all over Massachusetts through the night and the next morning to alert other colonists that the British Army was on the march.
  2. Pomeranians can run very fast, up to 12 miles per hour, if they do it in short bursts and take frequent breaks.
  3. Paul Revere wouldn’t have shouted, “The British are coming!” He was trying to be very quiet. He didn’t want to be heard by either the neighbors who were loyal to the king or by the British troops themselves. And he wouldn’t have called them ”the British.” Colonists considered themselves to be British, too. He would have called the British army “Regulars.”
  4. Grown-up Pomeranians usually weigh about 7 to 10 pounds, but they can weigh as little as 3 pounds.
  5. Paul Revere’s original mission wasn’t to warn the townspeople of Concord that the British were on their way. It was to warn John Hancock and Samuel Adams, who were in Lexington, that the British troops were on the way to arrest them.

We’ll be telling you about more fun facts we learned writing this book and the At the Heels of History series at AtTheHeelsOfHistory.com. We hope you enjoy going on Filigree’s Midnight Ride with our favorite Patriot Pomeranian!
