Meet A Taxonomy Of Love!
The moment Spencer meets Hope the summer before seventh grade, it’s . . . something at first sight. He knows she’s special, possibly even magical. The pair become fast friends, climbing trees and planning world travels. After years of being outshone by his older brother and teased because of his Tourette syndrome, Spencer finally feels like he belongs. But as Hope and Spencer get older and life gets messier, the clear label of “friend” gets messier, too.
Through sibling feuds and family tragedies, new relationships and broken hearts, the two grow together and apart, and Spencer, an aspiring scientist, tries to map it all out using his trusty system of taxonomy. He wants to identify and classify their relationship, but in the end, he finds that life doesn’t always fit into easy-to-manage boxes, and it’s this messy complexity that makes life so rich and beautiful.
Spencer’s Favorite YA Books (in no particular order):
ILLUMINAE by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
Spencer’s really into science, so he couldn’t get enough of Kady’s hacker skills, deadly virus outbreaks, and the interstellar setting. Oh. And his favorite character is Aidan ????
The HARRY POTTER Series by JK Rowling
I mean, he has a pet tarantula named Lord Voldemort. Spencer loves this entire series with every bit of his heart (yes, even Book 5 when Harry gets all moody and the epilogue at the end of Book 7). He’s the kind of person who holds out hope that one day a Hogwarts letter might arrive on his doorstep.
FINNIKIN OF THE ROCK by Melina Marchetta
Spencer keeps Finnikin right next to Harry Potter on his bookshelf. The characters, the slow burn romance, the world building that’s so perfect you feel like you never want to leave? Yeah, all of that.
AN EMBER IN THE ASHES by Sabaa Tahir
Spencer devoured all of this book in one sitting (as you do). He may or may not have read a good portion of it under the covers with a flashlight, not because he would get in trouble for staying up reading but because The Commandant is so effing scary.
SIMON VS THE HOMO SAPIENS AGENDA by Becky Albertalli
Spencer sees a kindred spirit in Simon (lovestruck Hufflepuffs FTW!). They could hang out and eat Oreos together while they talk about Blue and Hope and debate Harry Potter ships (Neville and Luna, man. It should have happened.).
Most excited for: THE STRANGE FASCINATIONS OF NOAH HYPNOTIK by David Arnold
This book looks weird and wonderful in all the best ways, and Spencer can’t wait until May.
Hope’s Favorite YA Books (in no particular order):
All the Laini Taylor books ever
Hope reads every Laini Taylor book the day it comes out, disappearing into her bedroom and only emerging for chocolate chip cookies and peach tea.
WANDERLOVE by Kirsten Hubbard
Hope wants to travel everywhere in the world and see everything there is to see. Bria is her soul sister.
THE HATE U GIVE by Angie Thomas
Hope loves this book for how important it is and for what it has to teach us about racism. She also loves it for Starr – a fellow teenage girl who is changing the world.
All the Courtney Summers books ever
The girls that live in Courtney Summers’ books are complicated and wonderful and full of hard edges. They make Hope feel like it’s okay to not be perfect.
THE GIRL FROM EVERYWHERE by Heidi Heilig
Maps are kind of a big deal in this book. They’re also kind of a big deal in Hope’s life (she has them tacked over every square inch of her bedroom), so she loves everything about this book and Nix. She may also have a tiny crush on Kashmir ????
Most excited for: THE BELLES by Dhonielle Clayton
This book has a lush fantasy setting and smart thoughts on beauty and race and a phenomenal heroine, and Hope is here for all of it. She’s also counting down the days till February 6th.

I love the cover, very fun and colorful! The synopsis sounds very interesting and, as a person with a hyper-analytical mind, sounds right up my alley.
