Brian Weisfeld, the Founder and Chief Squad Officer of The Startup Squad, an initiative dedicated to helping girls reach their potential, teams up with Fix-It Friends author Nicole C. Kear to present this middle-grade series about friendship and entrepreneurship.

Operating a lemonade stand is just the beginning for Resa, Harriet, Didi, and Amelia, as these savvy, business-minded schoolgirls learn that good business isn’t just about making a profit, but about making friends. Each book features tips from the Startup Squad and an inspirational profile of a girl entrepreneur.

Visit thestartupsquad.com for more information, inspiring profiles of savvy girls, and advice on launching your own small business!

Top 5 favorite scenes and why

Ooh. Good question! But not an easy assignment. Okay, here it goes:

  1. Harriet teaches Didi how to sell lemonade in Chapter 10 of The Startup Squad (Book #1)

This scene was based on actual advice that I have given to hundreds of girl scouts. Didi is shy and uncomfortable speaking to strangers and pitching her lemonade. Harriet is extremely outgoing and comfortable talking to anyone at any time. Harriet advises Didi to memorize her sales pitch like it was a line in the school play. Then, each time someone walks by the lemonade stand, she would just have to say the same sales pitch to everyone like it was a line in a play. The advice helped Didi get more comfortable speaking to strangers just as it has for all those girl scouts I worked with.

  1. Eleanor the ice cream bartender tells the girls you “Win Some, Learn Some” in Chapter 16 of Face the Music (book #2)

Eleanor is a high schooler who works at the local ice cream shop. We created Eleanor as a tv-sitcom-bartender-type character who could listen to the girls’ challenges and offer them advice. We try to avoid adults giving advice or help to the girls in the books so we slipped Eleanor in to play that role. She’s fairly business and people savvy for a high school student, and each book includes at least one scene where the girls meet at the ice cream shop to solve their problems or differences. In this scene, Eleanor encourages the girls to take risks and try new things. She says “win some, learn some” instead of “win some, lose some” which is something I say to kids all the time during my school visits to encourage them to take risks and not be afraid to fail; two tenets of an entrepreneurial mindset that will serve kids well in life.

  1. The business tips in the back of each book

Technically this is not a scene but it is an important part of each book. The narrative of our books focuses on the relationships between the girls more than on the business aspects of their lemonade stand, t-shirt business, and party planning. We try to “bake the broccoli into the brownies” of the narrative and save the more direct business tips and content for the back of the book where we outline actual business tips to help the readers with their businesses. Our hope is that the stories will inspire readers to start their own businesses. Then, in the back matter, the business tips will help them be more successful with their businesses. Each book includes three to four tips about such topics as marketing, negotiation, creating a business plan, and many more.

  1. The girlpreneur interview in the back of each book

As long as I’m breaking the rules and not technically citing scenes, I’m also going to cite the interviews with actual girl CEOs that are included in each book. The Startup Squad books inspire our readers to start their own businesses, and provide tools to do a better job of doing so. But we also want readers to realize that even kids can start and run a big business! Each book includes an interview with a tween or teen girl who runs a successful business to serve as an aspirational example to our readers. The Startup Squad website includes videos of over 90 girl CEOs sharing their inspirational stories and we wanted to bring some of that content into our books, too.

  1. The scene excerpted below – Didi leaves her comfort zone in Chapter 9 of Party Problems (Book #3)

In Party Problems, Didi gets a job using her art skills to create place cards for a family friend’s wedding. In the scene below, Agnes (the bride) calls Didi to tell her that Gigi (the wedding planner) has mono and asks Didi to take over as the wedding planner! Didi is understandably worried about taking on the role – she’s never done anything like that before - but with the help of her friends, she decides to step out of her comfort zone and take on the job. She knows that even if she fails, she’ll learn a lot that will help her succeed in the future. Win some, learn some!
