WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

“Dream It & Do It by Holly Sharp is a perfect book for young kids who want to find their place in this world and what they would like to be when they are older”- Readers Favorite 5 Star Review

"I am thrilled to share my story about the power of science. The journey to discovery itself is so interesting, but then to witness how it can improve people's lives is a thrill beyond description. Holly Sharp has done such a beautiful service to society in inspiring children to work hard and follow their passions.”- Jean Bennett (geneticist helping reverse blindness)

“Your work is very very important for kids. There is no wonder that you received a pre-launch 5 star review from "Readers’ Favorite"– Majd Mashharawi (Founder of Materials Engineering Startup)

“This helps children to create their own serendipity”–Gianna Gaudinin (Google event planner)

"Reading is for everyone and can help you achieve your own dream it and do it dreams--whatever they might be!"- Dawn Wacek librarian featured on Ted Talk®

"I believe that young girls need to see role models in all professions, and young boys need to see women in these roles as well. While growing up, I wish I had the advice and vision this book offers to young people"- Rochelle Jones (one of FDNY’s first female firefighters)

Dream of Helping

Animals

Like

Dr. Pol

Animals get sick, just like us. They need regular checkups and care when they are unwell. It might be your family dog or cat, a whale at Sea World, a penguin at the zoo or a cow on a farm. Dr. Pol is a veterinarian that cares for large animals like cows and horses. He loves all animals big and small and has cared for them his entire life.

Dr. Pol was born on a dairy farm in the Netherlands. He was the only one of the children in the family who woke up early to help his father with the animals. At one year old, he was caring for a chicken that could not lay eggs. By the time he was twelve, he was trusted to help a pig give birth. Assisting the mother pig to deliver her baby was so satisfying. At that point, he knew then that he wanted to be a veterinarian.

Dr. Pol moved to Michigan to marry his wife, whom he met through an exchange program. He studied the different cities and discovered that there was an area that had a lot of farm animals. Though, it had few veterinarians. Before he even had his equipment ordered, his phone was already ringing. A farmer had a cow giving birth and needed his help.

He has delivered hundreds of calves, but one particular birth brought tears to his eyes. He arrived at the farm and the farmer was worried that the calf being born wasn’t breathing. He helped the cow give birth to the calf but his fears were true. The calf wasn’t breathing. He performed different movements to help start the breathing including pouring water over its head. Just when everyone thought that nothing else could be done, the calf took a breath. It was moments like this that made all of the middle-of dinner and late-night calls worth it.

His son was working in California on TV and movies and had a thought: “My Dad is such a character and his job would be interesting to kids. So, I should film him for a TV show!” Thus, he moved back home to Michigan and followed him around for a week with a camera.

He filmed everything from small animals in his daily veterinary practice to the large animals he saw on the farm. National Geographic loved the idea, and so, the show has been on television for seventeen seasons.

If you’re interested in becoming a veterinarian, Dr. Pol’s show (called The Incredible Dr. Pol) is a great place to learn about what it’s truly like to care for animals.

As Dr. Pol would say, “You have to let the animal tell you what is wrong with it.” Animals can’t speak, so you have to be skilled at looking at looking for clues and symptoms to treat an animal in distress properly. You may love animals, but after watching the show, you’ll know if you love all the other things that come along with caring for them when they are sick!

About the Holly:

Sharp spent the bulk of her career in new product development—dreaming up intuitive ideas from how to kill bugs to new ice cream forms to hit grocery shelves. A self-proclaimed problem-solver, she loves to think about the things that the world needs and figuring out how to make those things come to life. “Knowing in high school what I wanted to do with my life set me up for the right path. I wanted the same for my child and searched for books to guide her, but came up short,” Sharp said. “That’s when I thought, ‘why not write the book for my child that she needs and that will also help others?”
