Multicultural Children's Book Day--Press Release

MULTICULTURAL CHILDREN’S BOOK DAY & JUNIOR LIBRARY GUILD ANNOUNCE CLASSROOM DIVERSITY READING CHALLENGE AND FREE BOOK OFFER

Multicultural Children’s Book Day (MCBD), which since 2014 has fostered tremendous online support for diversity awareness, is celebrated each January as a nationwide youth reading initiative. In less than two years, it’s achieved more than 26 million social media shares, and is supported by 200+ book bloggers, 9 CoHosts, and 17 prominent corporate sponsors. This year, MCBD will be celebrated January 27th, 2016 and will focus on putting multicultural books on classroom and library shelves and also into the hands of deserving families through book donations. As a new incentive to schools, the Junior Library Guild has signed as a major sponsor of MCBD and they’ve launched the joint Classroom Diversity Reading Challenge

The new initiative will encourage teachers who sign up for the free-of-charge diversity challenge to encourage their class to read up to four multicultural books in their classroom to earn a free multicultural book, which will be provided thanks to the generous donation and partnership from the Junior Library Guild. All books are pre-screened and approved by the Junior Library Guild, to insure each free book for the classroom is a pre-screened, library-quality book that maps to Common Core.  Teachers and educators can sign up their classroom via the Multicultural Children’s Book Day before December 18, 2015.

MCBD co-founders Valarie Budayr from Jump Into a Book and Mia Wenjen from Pragmatic Mom have said, “we are excited to be able to offer teachers and educators this unique opportunity to earn a free hardcover diversity children’s book for their classroom as part of our mission to not only raise awareness for the kid’s books that celebrate diversity, but to get more of these of books into classrooms and libraries.”

Multicultural Children’s Book Day is a non-profit organization that is passionate about getting books that allows kids to “see themselves in the pages of a book, into the hands of young readers, teachers, parents and librarians. Multicultural Children's Book Day's main focus in 2016 will be putting multicultural children’s books on classroom and library shelves and also into the hands of deserving families through book donations.
