Movie Teaser: Chaos Walking (Patrick Ness)

This first book in the Chaos Walking trilogy is now a major motion picture starring Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland, directed by Doug Liman (director of The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow), written for the screen by Patrick Ness and Christopher Ford, and produced by Doug Davison, Allison Shearmur, Erwin Stoff, and Alison Winter. Mads Mikkelsen, Demián Bichir, Cynthia Erivo, Nick Jonas, Kurt Sutter, and David Oyelowo also appear. The movie is slated to release in January 2021; Candlewick Press is publishing a movie tie-in edition on November 24, 2020.

In the not too distant future, Todd Hewitt (Tom Holland) discovers Viola (Daisy Ridley), a mysterious girl who crash-lands on his planet, where all the women have disappeared and the men are afflicted by “the Noise,” a force that puts all their thoughts on display. In this dangerous landscape, Viola’s life is threatened, and as Todd vows to protect her, he will have to discover his own inner power and unlock the planet’s dark secrets.

The movie from Lionsgate is based on the multi-award-winning, best-selling novel by Patrick Ness. The Knife of Never Letting Go, the first book in the thrilling Chaos Walking trilogy, was published to a sea of accolades and awards. The series, which also includes The Ask and the Answer and Monsters of Men, has clocked over two million sales worldwide and is published in twenty-eight languages around the world. More than a decade after its release, the trilogy’s themes of war, privacy, gender, and extremism still resonate, with Ness’s exploration of the possible damage from a loss of privacy and quiet space seeming particularly prescient.

Patrick Ness is a beloved and best-selling author for young people and has won many major prizes in children’s fiction. His novels for teenagers have won the Carnegie Medal twice, won the Costa Children’s Fiction Prize, and been short-listed for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the Arthur C. Clarke Award. John Green has described him as “an insanely beautiful writer.” Ness has also become known for writing screenplays, including the big-screen adaptation of his novel A Monster Calls (which released in 2017, starring Liam Neeson, Sigourney Weaver, and Felicity Jones) and the screenplay for the BBC Doctor Who spin-off, Class.

Chaos Walking is one of my all time favorite series! I'm happy I discovered the books years ago, but I love seeing other people interested in the books with the movie coming out.
