Map Reveal: Winterspell by Claire Legrand + Giveaway (US/Canada)

Hello YABC! Today we have a special kind of reveal for you!

Today we're super excited to celebrate the map reveal for WINTERSPELL by Claire Legrand, releasing September 30, 2014 from Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers. Before we get to the map, here's a note from Claire:

Hi YABC readers! Claire Legrand here, and today I am revealing the map that will be inside my upcoming YA debut, Winterspell! I don’t know about you, but when I open a book and realize there is a map inside, I experience a kind of reader giddiness unlike any other. I love poring over the details of a map, admiring the artwork, and flipping back to the map as I read to orient myself more fully within the world of the story. In case you are unfamiliar with Winterspell, it is a re-imagining of The Nutcracker, and the bulk of the story takes place in the land of Cane, an island country besieged by winter and decades of war. Incredibly talented illustrator Catherine Scully (who also drew and designed my gorgeous Winterspell character postcards) created the map of Cane, and I could not be happier with the result. I love the detail in the border—the mechanical birds, the monstrous lok in the righthand corner, how thorny vines intermingle with coils of iron. And, of course, I adore the gorgeous figure of Anise the faery queen, in the lefthand corner. The map will be black and white in the finished copies of Winterspell, but I am sharing both the black and white AND color versions here, so you can enjoy the map in all its splendor. I hope you love it as much as I do!

We also have a brief message from artist Catherine Scully:

When Claire asked me to do the postcards as well as the world map, it was a dream not only to be working with one of my favorite authors, but such a tremendous friend. When I first read the book, I was so excited to work on art with her that I started sketching concepts during a Nutcracker performance last December, much to the puzzlement of the surrounding patrons. I wanted to create something that would be as intricate and beautiful as Claire's writing and story, which was definitely fueled by my love of steampunk and art nouveau. Claire and I collaborated, sharing notes and hundreds of emails to create the right map for Winterspell. I could not be more pleased with the fruits of our labor.

ISBN-10: 1442465980

About the Book
The clock chimes midnight, a curse breaks, and a girl meets a prince . . . but what follows is not all sweetness and sugarplums.

New York City, 1899. Clara Stole, the mayor's ever-proper daughter, leads a double life. Since her mother's murder, she has secretly trained in self-defense with the mysterious Drosselmeyer.

Then, on Christmas Eve, disaster strikes.

Her home is destroyed, her father abducted--by beings distinctly not human. To find him, Clara journeys to the war-ravaged land of Cane. Her only companion is the dethroned prince Nicholas, bound by a wicked curse. If they're to survive, Clara has no choice but to trust him, but his haunted eyes burn with secrets--and a need she can't define. With the dangerous, seductive faery queen Anise hunting them, Clara soon realizes she won't leave Cane unscathed--if she leaves at all.

Inspired by The Nutcracker, Winterspell is a dark, timeless fairy tale about love and war, longing and loneliness, and a girl who must learn to live without fear.

Ah, the map is so cool! I love books with maps, so this is delightful. Was already very much looking forward to Winterspell (I mean, a retelling of the Nutcracker? What?!) and loved the cover, but this gorgeous map is another plus. The frame, I think, is my favorite.

This map is so unique and gorgeous! I used to dance in The Nutcracker as a little girl so I am seeing some familiar elements in the map but with an really cool new twist! This book is definitely one of my most highly anticipated fall releases.

This map is super cool looking! I kinda wish the map would be in color in the book, but that would be super pricey. But a map in a book makes me super excited, and this book sounds AMAZING, so double yay!
