Kids Review: Pug & Pig and Friends (Sue Lowell Gallion)
About This Book:
The stars of the celebrated Pug Meets Pig and Pug & Pig Trick-or-Treat are back in this funny and timely tale about learning to get along.
Pug and Pig and their friends Robin and Squirrel love digging in the garden and zooming around the backyard together. But there’s another “friend” in the backyard who isn’t quite so friendly. That’s Cat. What does Cat love doing? Cat loves sneaking up on Pug and scaring him! Pug does not think this is funny. And he does not like it at all. But when thunderstorm comes and Cat gets scared up a tree, Pig, Robin, and Squirrel can’t get him to climb down. Only Pug can help. But will he?

What I loved: This was a sweet story of friendship, even with its ups and downs. I appreciated seeing the friends be there for each other and try to help Cat after the storm. The illustrations are great with all of the usual Pug and Pig charm - cute characters and plenty of color. The simple language is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers, explaining things clearly and in simple terms for readers. The repetitive text is also great for beginning readers, who will appreciate the simplicity as they begin to read on their own. The font is large and clear, making it easy to read.
What left me wanting more: As a small point, the thunderstorm and lightning coming after Cat can be a bit scary for sensitive readers, and it's not good to run up into a tree when there is lightning, so I would take the opportunity to talk to children about what to do when they see lightning (eg, go inside your home like Pug and Pig and not into the tree like Cat).
Final verdict: A sweet picture book about friendship, PUG & PIG AND FRIENDS is a fun new installment in a delightful series for toddlers and preschoolers.
