It’s Live!! Cover Reveal: Things I’d Rather Do Than Die by Christine Hurley Deriso + Giveaway (US Only)
Today we're super excited to celebrate the cover reveal for THINGS I'D RATHER DO THAN DIE by Christine Hurley Deriso, releasing September 18, 2018 from Flux. Before we get to the cover, here's a note from Christine:
Hi YABC! And welcome to the Things I’d Rather Do Than Die! When my publisher asked me to weigh in with ideas about my book cover, it was only in retrospect I realized how much heavy lifting I was expecting the image to do. I thought the artwork should be subtle—the title packs such a punch that I didn’t want the image to compete with it—and subtlety is often the hardest nuance to pull off. Plus, I wanted to capture contrasts, since Jade and Ethan (the main characters) are polar opposites. That’s not asking much, is it? Apparently not, because I was blown away by the artist’s work. Jade’s and Ethan’s silhouettes against the backdrop of crumpled paper with a book excerpt, along with the bold font of the title, create a precisely the tone I was hoping for. The cover is stark yet nuanced, bold yet soft, smoldering yet cool—just like the characters! Thank you, Flux. Your artwork is amazing!

THINGS I'D RATHER DO THAN DIE
By: Christine Hurley Deriso
Release Date: September 18, 2018
When Jade Fulton and Ethan Garrett, the two most mismatched seniors at Walt Whitman High School, find themselves locked in an aerobics room overnight, their confinement forces them to push past the labels they've given each other. Amid hours of arguing, philosophizing, and silly game playing, Ethan and Jade learn there's a lot more to the other person than meets the eye.
But after their night in confinement, they return to their comfort zones-Ethan's football prowess and long-standing romance with the school beauty, and Jade's cerebral pursuits and close friendship with the quirky Gia. Still, they find themselves inexorably pulled back to the connection they formed that night, a bond they increasingly value as Jade struggles with her dad's cancer diagnosis and Ethan tries to distance himself from his alcoholic father.

What do you think about the cover and synopsis?
The cover is so artistic and textural. I like it very much.
I can see how the summary would draw in readers wanting a light story, but it sounds like it would go much deeper than that.
