Hi everyone!
Emmy in my new novel Dial Em for Murder is obsessed with romance novels, which is something I definitely have in common with her. I’ve always been a voracious reader but I didn’t really believe in myself as a writer until my freshman year of high school. That’s when I was bullied by one of my teachers. She spent a whole year making my life miserable, but books were always my safe haven. Dealing with that teacher made me want to write a heroine who was a bit like me, except she was bolder and braver and more rebellious. And then I added a really cute boy who believed that she could handle anything. I started that book feeling absolutely powerless, but when I reached the happily ever after I felt invincible. Writing Dial Em for Murder was an equally wonderful experience. I loved watching Emmy use the world of fiction to survive a much harsher reality than my own (nobody was actually trying to kill me!) …and I hope my books will be that safe refuge for other people that I once so desperately needed myself.

DIAL EM FOR MURDER
Sixteen-year-old Emmy Danvers was just trying to write a halfway decent romance novel when a senile old man mumbled a cryptic warning, tackled her to the ground in the middle of Starbucks, and…died right on top of her.
Unfortunately for Emmy, the incident wasn’t quite as random as she thought, and it turns out that the old man might have taken a bullet for her. Not only that, he slipped something into her pocket: a digital tablet containing secrets that she has no idea how to unlock, but that others are ready to kill for. Thrust into a world where nothing is as it seems, Emmy must try to track down her absentee father, deal with a flirtatious bad boy who may or may not be on her side, and, oh yeah, stay one step ahead of the killers lurking in the shadows of an exclusive prep school. The old man’s parting advice to “trust nobody” doesn’t sound so crazy after all….
About the Author
Marni Bates began her writing career at the age of 19 with her autobiography, MARNI, for HCI’s Louder Than Words series. Her debut novel, AWKWARD, has been translated into multiple languages and optioned by Disney Channel as a made for TV movie.
