Meet Amy Fellner Dominy!

 
AMY FELLNER DOMINY is an author of teen and tween novels, including DIE FOR YOU, A MATTER OF HEART, AUDITION & SUBTRACTION, and OyMG, a Sydney Taylor Notable Book for Teens. Amy is a former advertising copywriter and earned an MFA in playwriting. Her plays for adults and children have been staged across the country. Amy lives with her family in Phoenix, AZ. Meet Nate Evans!
 

NATE EVANS is the author or author-illustrator of more than forty children's books, including PONYELLA with Laura Numeroff. His most recent picture book is BANG! BOOM ROAR! A Busy Crew of Dinosaurs. Before turning to his true love--children's books--he was a greeting card artist. Nate is also a seventh grade English teacher and loves to share his passion for books with students. Meet Cookiesaurus Rex!

 
 As soon as Cookiesaurus Rex comes out of the oven, he declares that he is King of All Cookies. He should be frosted before all of the standard-shaped cookies, in a nice bright green. But the other cookies are getting sprinkles, or shiny stars, or even gumdrops . . . WAIT ONE STINKIN' STOMPIN' MINUTE! Cookiesaurus wants a do-over. Problem is, he might not end up with the kind of "do" he wants. Readers will love the funny back-and-forth between this cheeky cookie and the hand that frosts him. See who gets his licks in at the end!
 

Ingredients that go into Writing a Picture Book

Want to whip up a tasty picture book?

We’re Amy and Nate, the co-authors of Cookiesaurus Rex, and we always get asked how did our dinosaur cookie come to be? Well, today we’re here to share our secret recipe. (Eat your heart out Julia Child.)

INGREDIENTS:

A Sprinkle of What If?

A Dash of Why not?

Time

Thick Skin

1. Gather together your ingredients.
2. Mix until you have laughter. (Note: This can take some time so be patient. And if you like to create at a public coffee shop, we recommend a table in the back.)
3. Don’t worry about how your batter looks—experimenting at this stage is recommended.
4. Once you have your idea on paper, pour it into your computer and mold gently until it takes shape.
5. Carefully inspect for any weaknesses. Is every word tasty? If not how can it be sweetened?
6. Use the Delete Key liberally to improve the consistency and flavor.
7. Give your creation time to settle and then taste.

Repeat steps 5-7 as many times as necessary. Don’t be discouraged if something is lacking. (This particular Cookie was mixed and re-mixed seven times before it was just right.)

If you have a trusted taster, you can always share a sample. This taster should be gentle and kind, offering you a compliment sandwich: something you did right, a crumb of supportive criticism, followed with another helping of compliments. We got feedback along the way from our agent, Caryn Wiseman. We’re pretty sure she spit out those first few bites, but that’s where the thick skin comes in handy. (See ingredient list.)

Once you’ve taken your finished masterpiece from the oven, pause a moment for a deep breath. You smell that? That’s the scent of success. Finishing a book is never easy and always worth celebrating.

Finally, it’s time to share. This is a scary part for a lot of bakers. It’s possible that all your hard work will not be to the tastes of those you want to impress. But you’ll handle it because you’ve still got your thick skin on, right? And sometimes, it takes a little while to find that person with the right palate to really appreciate and love your masterpiece. So don’t give up. It took a little while until our cookie fell into exactly the right hands at Disney-Hyperion.
