Indie Superstars with the authors of Fire and Fantasy

Welcome to YA Books Central's "Indie Superstars" column. This monthly event will spotlight the best and brightest of the indie community.

You don’t want to miss out on these talented authors

This month, we chatted with a few of the authors from the Fire and Fantasy box set--containing over twenty full-length novels.

Welcome, Frost Kay, Michelle Lynn and Michelle Bryan of Fire and Fantasy!

YABC: What makes a good fantasy novel?

Frost Kay: World building! I LOVE a great fantasy world. If it's hard to imagine or "unclear" then it's almost always a dnf for me.

Michelle Lynn:  Characters. This could be said for any genres. I’m not big on description or too much info, but I love seeing the relationships between characters and how the world around them affects them. Is there magic? Some evil they have to face? How do they change in the midst of all of this.

Michelle Bryan: A good fantasy novel has to be able to draw you into an imaginary world where you can easily suspend your disbelief. The author must create an interesting, vast world with conflicting cultures and mysterious places – something that keeps you, the reader, guessing what’s over the horizon. Oh, and a quest. Every good fantasy needs a quest.

YABC: Why do you love writing fantasy?

Frost Kay: The creativity. I can do anything I want, anything! It makes the impossibles, possible.

Michelle Lynn: There’s so much you can do. I write in multiple genres and fantasy has this special power over my creativity because I’m not constrained by today’s world, today’s rules. The only social norms are the ones I create. Plus, magic complicates EVERYTHING! No joke, when Michelle Bryan and I are outlining out co-written fantasies, we have to stop ourselves because there are so many situations that are completely altered because someone can use magic or someone can’t. It changes the balance between male and female, talented fighters and more meek characters. It’s challenging and I love that.

Michelle Bryan: Simple. Because it's a world where anything is possible. What other genre can give you magic, and ogres, and dragons and Princesses all combined in one story? It is literally the genre that has it all.

YABC: Traits of a good fantasy hero/heroine.

Frost Kay: A sense of justice, honor, and a strong moral code with a side of bad ass.

Michelle Lynn: Fearlessness, dedication, a belief in themselves, love. They have to have a strong love for their people or something they want to save or protect. That’s usually what drives a fantasy.

Michelle Bryan: They must have strong characterization. You can write the best story about magic ever, but if your characters are cardboard cutouts, no one will care about them. They should have real conflicts and problems that mirror our own reality so the reader can identify.

YABC: How important is romance to a fantasy storyline?

Frost Kay: It depends on the story for me, but I adore slow burning romance in fantasy

Michelle Lynn: I typically won’t read a book that doesn’t have some sort of romance, but there have been exceptions.

Michelle Bryan: I believe that every story is enhanced by a romance as long as it doesn't overpower the fantasy storyline. As I said earlier, if the characters have issues that mirror true life it helps the reader identify with them, and nothing does that better than a love story.

YABC: Describe the perfect fantasy villain.

Frost Kay: Ooooo...this is a hard one. I find myself fascinated with villains that seem normal, or even someone you'd like to be friends with.

Michelle Lynn: Hmmm. One who’s sympathetic. They can’t be evil just for evil’s sake. There has to be some underlying cause. A lost love? A child? Are they really trying to protect someone? I like to hate the villains, but also to understand them.

Michelle Bryan: It should be someone you love to hate. Strong motivation… that’s the key to creating a fantastic fantasy villain.. The villain must have some justification for their actions. They just didn't wake up one morning and decide to be the bad guy. There has to be something that pushed them over the edge. The villain needs therefore, to have some redeeming aspects of their character and that in turn will keep the readers hooked to the last page.

YABC: If you could choose one fantasy staple (magic, dragons, mermaids, etc.) to write a story around, which would it be?

Frost Kay: Dragons or mermaids. Sorry, there's no way I could choose either!

Michelle Lynn: Dragons. I’ve never written them, but am fascinated by them right now. Maybe it’s the Game of Thrones effect.

Michelle Bryan: Magic for sure. A story that has magic has endless possibilities.

The Giveaway

Only magic can save them from what is coming, but first, it must be reclaimed.

Twenty years ago, war devastated Dreach. Bloody and cruel, it ravaged the realm and stripped magic from Dreach-Sciene.

Without magic, there is no hope. No life. For Prince Trystan Renauld, there is no choice. As his people starve, his enemy prepares for a final showdown that will decide the fate of the realm. Without magical power, he and his people will lose everything. Even with it, they may fail.

Against a backdrop of prophecy, curses, and forbidden love, Trystan must reunite the legendary Tri-Gard, keepers of the magic, and find the power he’s always believed was a fairy tale: magic, the very foundation of life. With both sides preparing for battle, it’s a race against time—and against the kind of darkness that can destroy them all.

Prophecy of Darkness is an epic adventure to destroy evil. Do you dare to join the Prince and the people of Dreach-Sciene to fight the darkness before everything is lost? Will you help the Princess prove she is more than they think she is? Are you ready to fall in love?
