FROM THE AUTHOR:

In my sophomore book The Truth Is, my main character Verdad is on an identity quest to find out who she is as a queer person of color and is besieged by dichotomies. She’s been the victim of a shooting by a white supremacist, yet she struggles as an insider and outsider of Puerto Rican culture. She falls for trans boy Danny who defends her against sexual assault on a bus, yet she realizes she herself has been raised to be homophobic and transphobic. She has experienced the pain of racism, homophobia, and rejection, but comes to appreciate her privilege when she encounters the homeless LGBTQIA+ teens in her own neighborhood.

Verdad, like so many teens with intersectional identities, must come to terms with how she has been oppressed, but must also understand how even the oppressed can become the oppressor against other marginalized communities. Like Kirkus said much of my book has to deal with how a woke person of color can be so ‘sleep. But how can Verdad continue her journey to wokeness without overreliance on other marginalized persons to educate her? Books por supuesto, and she walks around carrying a truck load of them even when she runs away from home.

For adults like me who were educated in schools infected by systemic racism, #ownvoices books are the antidote. For children like my character Verdad, who are being raised in a world where people fight against being called racists as they enact systems of oppression, #ownvoices books can be the antidote, the salve, the cure. Children are magical and with the right books are capable of seeing through adult inconsistencies and failures and past them to solutions, to a future where truth isn’t gaslighted. Where truth is truly love and justice for all.

About the Book:

A powerful exploration of love, identity, and self-worth through the eyes of a fierce, questioning Puerto Rican teen.

Fifteen-year-old Verdad doesn't think she has time for love. She's still struggling to process the recent death of her best friend, Blanca; dealing with the high expectations of her hardworking Puerto Rican mother and the absence of her remarried father; and keeping everyone at a distance. But when she meets Danny, a new guy at school―who happens to be trans―all bets are off. Verdad suddenly has to deal with her mother's disapproval of her relationship with Danny as well as her own prejudices and questions about her identity, and Danny himself, who is comfortable in his skin but keeping plenty of other secrets.
