About the Book
In this fast-paced sequel to The Interrogation of Ashala Wolf, Ashala and her friends face a new danger from the least expected source — one of their own.
After a daring raid on Detention Center 3 to rescue their trapped peers, Ashala Wolf and her Tribe of fellow Illegals — children with powerful and inexplicable abilities — are once again entrenched in their safe haven, the Firstwood. Existing in alliance with the ancient trees and the giant intelligent lizards known as saurs, the young people of the Tribe do their best to survive and hide. But the new peace is fractured when Ashala’s friend Ember Crow goes missing, leaving only a cryptic message behind. Ember claims to be harboring terrible secrets about her past that could be a threat to the Tribe and all Illegals. Ashala and her boyfriend, Connor, spring into action, but with Ashala’s Sleepwalking ability functioning erratically and unknown enemies lying in wait, leaving the Firstwood is a dangerous proposition. Can Ashala and Connor protect the Tribe and bring Ember home, or must they abandon one to save the other?

I love the cover!!!
I really like the shadow of the crow on her face. It’s such a unique cover!
The cover is eye-catching and personally very compelling on a visceral level according to my particular aesthetic sense (which, it is worth noting, is not out of step with the larger target audience’s tastes as far as I can tell). That said, the cover underplays the potential appeal of the book to readers seeking particularly literary/sophisticated/adult/original YA fiction (I’m using “/” to abbreviate “and/or” specifically).
My point: It doesn’t look like stereotypical Kirkus/PW star-able fiction. One can appeal to a broad YA readership as well as suggest more highbrow/adult reading value through visuals on the cover; strength of design need not be compromised in any way. For the record, I know to judge a book by more than its cover (although my eyes have very strong prejudices of their own ;-).
Thanks for another great opportunity for readers to read and own great new fiction for free! Cheers, Kara S
I’m always excited to read something written by someone from an indigenous group of people. I am not familiar with many Australian authors so I am looking forward to reading this series. The premise is intriguing!
The disappearance of Ember Crow sounds great ♡ I love the cover! Thank you
This is exciting and the cover is beautiful!
I love, love the crow shadow. I’ve been noticing lots of shadow photo opportunities for myself lately. This is really creative.
I like that the title of the book is on her face. The synopsis has me vey interested in the characters and their story.
