Release Date: 4/21/15

About the Book

New York Times bestselling author Neal Shusterman has a devoted and passionate following of young fans worldwide because his novels and stories get to the heart of young people’s experiences.  He regularly tackles such universal issues as isolation and loneliness, fear of failure, bullying, as well as the complications inherent in friendship and family. Now, he takes on his most deeply personal and heartrending topic to date, with an imaginative exploration of mental illness in CHALLENGER DEEP (HarperTeen: Hardcover: $17.99; Pub date: April 21, 2015, Ages 14 and up).

Although a work of fiction, the novel is deeply rooted in Neal’s own experience with his son Brendan, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia when he was 16 years old.  For several years after diagnosis, Neal and his family worked to pull Brendan from the depths of the disease.
Happily, Brendan is now 26 years old and is doing well; while he will never be fully cured, he has his condition under control and is living a normal life.  Paralleling Brendan’s journey, CHALLENGER DEEP is a book Neal felt compelled to write to honor his son and to show readers that there is hope and healing on the other side of mental illness.

“With CHALLENGER DEEP, I wanted to offer a fresh, unflinching perspective, to help people understand, and to submerge readers in the strange surreal depths of mental illness, seeing it from the inside out,” explains Shusterman.  “The character of Caden Bosch is not my son – but many of the situations are taken from real life – including the events leading up to and during his hospitalization.”
