Featured Review: Blood & Honey (Serpent & Dove #2) (Shelby Mahurin)
About This Book:
The stakes are higher. The witches are deadlier. And the romance is red-hot. The eagerly anticipated sequel to the New York Times and Indiebound bestseller Serpent & Dove is perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas. Lou, Reid, Coco, and Ansel are on the run from coven, kingdom, and church—fugitives with nowhere to hide. To survive, they need allies. Strong ones. But as Lou becomes increasingly desperate to save those she loves, she turns to a darker side of magic that may cost Reid the one thing he can’t bear to lose. Bound to her always, his vows were clear: where Lou goes, he will go; and where she stays, he will stay. Until death do they part.

This is going to be a hard review to write because I have so many words that want to come out! This was my most anticipated release of 2020 and I wasn't disappointed. The only thing I wish was different was that the author had stuck to a duology and we got the ending we wanted.
Lou along with Reid, Coco, Ansel, Beau, and Madam Trembley are forced into hiding with everyone seeking Lou and Reid's heads. Now that they know Reid has magic, Lou wants him to harness it and learn how to use it. However, Reid is still adamant that magic is evil and doesn't want to use it at all. He doesn't even want to be around it. Trembley knows that they can't sit any longer, and Lou quickly realizes that she is right. The only problem is that they can't beat her mom on their own. They need allies.
This realization sends Reid and Lou on different paths. Reid must go with Beau and Trembley while Lou, Coco, and Ansel pay Coco's aunt a visit. Their hoping they can get Coco's coven, the king, and the werewolves all into one alliance. Lou has a huge ambition to unite everyone against one common enemy, but old rivalries can't be snuffed out so easily. Especially when magic is involved.
While on their journey for allies, Reid starts to see the darker side of magic when Lou starts using it too much. But the risk of losing herself is worth it to her if it saves Reid's life. No matter how much of herself Lou gives away, Reid is there to pick up the pieces and put her back together. Their relationship is put to the test in this book and I was excited to see where their fates rested. The threat of her mom hangs over both of their heads and they have to rely on each other, which isn't the easiest thing for Lou to do when she's used to being on her own.
BLOOD & HONEY is the sequel to SERPENT & DOVE and is full of twists and magic just like the first one. It focuses on the desperation for allies and the side effects of using too much magic. The main difference from the first one is we get to see the sweet parts of Reid and Lou's relationship in full bloom. As for the characters, there are so many amazing ones. Ansel is so sweet and we really see his character growth. Coco is always so loyal and fierce. Beau is the comedic relief that you can't help but love. Lou is stubborn and reckless but will do anything for the ones she loves. Reid is willing to do anything to keep Lou safe but is stuck in his old ways and suppresses his magic. This isn't even mentioning the ones for Claude and his troupe. Each character is unique in their own way and I love them all. At the end I cried and was left wanting to devour more. I eagerly await the third.
Final Verdict: I would recommend this series to fans of magic, inner darkness, witches, betrayal and loyalty, werewolves, and royalty.
