Exclusive Cover Reveal: When You Were Here by Daisy Whitney

Exclusive Cover Reveal: When You Were Here by Daisy Whitney

We are very excited to bring you another cover reveal this week! This time we're revealing WHEN YOU WERE HERE by Daisy Whitney, author of The Mockingbirds and The Rivals.

Here's a message from Daisy:

Hi YABC! And welcome to the exclusive cover reveal for WHEN YOU WERE HERE!

I'm so excited to share with you the cover for my third young adult novel, WHEN YOU WERE HERE. I love the thoughtful, contemplative, yet hopeful vibe of the image, especially the way the boy is looking as if he’s searching or yearning because that’s what this novel is all about. The design team and my editor at Little Brown did an amazing job and I’m thrilled to share it with the readers here.

We definitely agree it gives off that searching/yearning vibe. Very intriguing!

So what's Daisy's new book about?

This is not a story about grief, cancer, or loss, or even the story of a mother and a son, or a boy and a girl. It’s a story about the two most powerful forces known to man – death and love.

Danny’s mother lost her battle with cancer two months before his high school graduation – the one day that she was hanging on to see. Now Danny is left alone, with only his memories, his dog, and his heartbreaking ex-girlfriend Holland for company. He hardly knows what she wants from him or what to say for his valedictory speech, let alone how to live and be happy anymore.

Then a letter from his mother’s friend in Tokyo prompts him to drop everything and travel halfway around the world to discover his mom’s secrets – to reveal why her final months were filled with so much joy. But yet he can’t find the answers, or escape the complexities of his relationship with Holland, just by crossing an ocean. Yet amid the cherry blossoms, temples and vibrant crowds of the neon city – and with the help of an almost-but-definitely-not Harajuku girl – Danny learns that maybe neither ancient magic nor mystical treatment kept his mother going. Kept her happy. Perhaps the secret of how to live lies in how she died. And how she loved.

I love those last lines: "Perhaps the secret of how to live lies in how she died. And how she loved." And I love contemporary YA that takes us halfway across the world. Can't wait to read this one! It will be available June 2013.

Until then, enter to win a set of signed books from Daisy! One lucky international winner will receive both The Mockingbirds and The Rivals! Enter using the form below.

I love all of Daisy Whitney's covers, but this one seems so special because of the lighting. It's so beautiful, and the effect it has on the colouring is amazing!

I'm a bit over the lens flair effect, but I like that the boy isn't model-hot.
