Cover Reveal: These Gentle Wounds by Helene Dunbar + Giveaway (International)

Ready for this week's cover reveal? You know we are!

Today we're revealing Helene Dunbar's THESE GENTLE WOUNDS, available May 2014 from Flux. But before we get to the goods, here's a message from Helene:

Hi YABC readers. I’m Helene and thanks for making the dream of sharing the cover for my debut book, THESE GENTLE WOUNDS, come true.

I’m one of those readers who picks things off the shelf based on the title and cover, so I have to admit to being nervous while I was waiting for my editor, Brian Farrey-Lutz, to send me samples of the direction in which he and the folks at Flux were heading.

But really, I think that’s been the easiest part of publishing so far! :) Brian sent me two images he’d come across to get my thoughts. I liked a first one a lot. But when I saw the second, my thoughts all consisted of “Yes, please! Yes, please! Yes, please!” I wrote a groveling email BEGGING him to use that image because it nailed EVERYTHING in my book. Vulnerability. Pain. Hope.

He suggested that I look around and send him images from other covers that spoke to me. Yeah, no. I looked through my many bookshelves and I have to admit that, at that moment, there wasn’t a single cover I loved as much as what he’d sent. The photo is by an amazing, young UK-based photographer named Oliver Charles (https://www.facebook.com/olivercharlesphoto), who is also the model and the design is by Kevin Brown.

Seriously, I can’t stop looking at it and I hope you like it, too.

~ Helene Dunbar

THESE GENTLE WOUNDS

By Helene Dunbar

Release date: May 2014

About the Book

Fifteen-year old Gordie Allen is a survivor, but all he feels is guilty for not saving the rest of his family during a terrible night five years ago. He copes by keeping to himself, caring only about school, hockey, and his older half-brother Kevin, who has been his best and only friend for as long as he can remember.

Sophomore year brings a variety of new challenges, though. For some reason, gutsy Sarah Miller seems to like him, but it’s the reappearance of his volatile father that cracks the fragile wall Gordie has built around himself. And while his growing relationship with Sarah both comforts and baffles him, it also drives a wedge between him and his brother.

All of these relationships are pushed to their breaking points when Gordie learns that his father has another child, a young boy who is suffering abuse at his father’s hands. This time he’s determined to do what he couldn’t five years before, take a stand to stop his father even if it means confronting the demons of the present to keep from drowning in the past.

Our Thoughts

You guys know I'm a sucker for golden tones and lens flare. I'm totally on board with any cover with hints of autumn. The colors, the sweater -- it just gets me excited for fall weather, scarves and mitts. But then I see this guy's expression, one of overwhelming despair that led him to the floor. What could've driven him there? I need to know, and I'm sure it's heartbreaking.

b2ap3_thumbnail_helene1_.jpgAbout the Author

Helene Dunbar usually writes features about fiddles and accordions for Irish Music Magazine, but she’s also been known to write about court cases, theater, and Native American Indian tribes. She’s amazed that she has a day job that pays her to spend time on Facebook and Twitter, and that, on a good day, gives her time to let the voices in her head out into the world to tell a story. If she had to put money on it, she’d bet that if music didn’t exist, she wouldn’t be able to write. She’s lived in two countries, six states, and is currently holed up in Nashville with her husband, two cats, and the world’s friendliest golden retriever.

The cover is nice, not my favorite. But the story is very interesting. I'm looking forward to reading it!

I like the glow of the sunlight - it brings out the essential optimism of being young and "standing up".

I love the cover, the young man looks so intriguing! He appears sensitive yet emotionally withdrawn. I love the golden light with his red hair, and I love the idea of gentleness which is shown so well through this picture!

This sounds SO GOOD. I have a tiny feeling it might make me cry (Ha!), but you had me at hockey. And cute boy. And very serious bizness cover.
