Today we’re excited to chat with Colleen Houck, the author of Recreated!!
Below you’ll find more about Colleen, her book, plus a giveaway!
YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?
I’m rather fond of the Devourer actually. She’s my villainess in Recreated. I love her clothes, her confidence, and her just overall attitude. She’s stuck in a pretty awful place and yet she’s every inch the queen. I kind of like that everyone who meets her tremble in her presence.
YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?
The novel was definitely first. I had an entirely different set of titles in mind for the series. I plan the titles all out along with the books when I’m plotting and this book was originally going to be called The Heart of the Sphinx. When my first book’s name was switched to Reawakened, I had to come up with something that fit and Recreated became the new title. We’re still going back and forth a bit on book three.
YABC: Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you’ve learned as a writer from then to now?
I think it’s to trust myself. There were many things I let go of in the beginning that I wish I would have fought for. At the same time, I’ve also learned to let go of some things I thought were important but really weren’t. An example of this is when a scene gets cut. I used to cry, stomp my feet, and obsess about it. Now I kind of shrug it off and use it as bonus material. If it’s really important to me, I take the time to explain why. I’ve learned how to compromise enough to get the important things I really want to keep.
YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?
I love the feathers and the eye. The colors are gorgeous too. If you look at it carefully you’ll see the boat. It has a name, Mesektet. The feathers are the feathers of Isis and a single feather has great healing properties. In fact, Isis’ feathers are also found on the arrows Lily uses in battle.
YABC: What’s up next for you?
I just finished writing book three in the Egyptian series and I’ll begin the editing process soon. At the same time I’m marketing Recreated and writing book five in the Tiger’s Curse series, called Tiger’s Dream.
YABC: Which was the most difficult or emotional scene to narrate?
The thing I struggle with the most is writing battle scenes. They’re just so long and I am definitely not a war strategist. I have to recruit my brother to help with those. When it comes to kissing scenes I can go for pages. 😉
YABC: Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?
I definitely like drafting. If I could never revise that would be my preference. I hate letting other people’s opinions have sway over what I’ve created. Fortunately for me, my editor is very hands off during the writing process so I can feel free during the creative portion.
YABC: What would you say is your superpower?
My family is a big superpower for me. I don’t think I’d be able to do this job without their help. They take care of me in so many ways and keep me going. When it comes to writing, I think my superpower is coming up with cliffhangers much to the consternation of my fans. =)
Meet Recreated!!
From Colleen Houck, New York Times bestselling author of The Tiger’s Curse, comes Recreated, the second book in the epic Egyptian-inspired Reawakened series, in which a seventeen-year-old must literally go to hell to save the love of her life.
Lily Young thought traveling across the globe with a reawakened sun prince was a grand adventure. Now she’s about to embark on the journey of a lifetime.
When Amon and Lily part tragically, he transports himself to the Netherworld—what mortals call hell. Tormented by the loss of his one true love, he’d rather suffer in agony during Lily’s mortal years than fulfill his duty to protect humanity.
Heartbroken, Lily seeks refuge on her grandmother’s farm. Yet she can feel Amon’s pain, and she has been having dreams—dreams of Amon continually suffering.
For before he departed, Amon gave Lily something very special, an item that connects them even though they are worlds apart. Now Lily must use this object to free him, and to free their realms from darkness and utter chaos. She will do whatever it takes.
