Welcome to our monthly special feature post, Bookstagrammer Of The Month!

Each month we will be interviewing a different Bookstagrammer  (Book lover/photographer on Instagram) who will share with us a bit of their experience with the #Bookstagram community!

Introducing Mariana of @bookisglee, YABC's Bookstagrammer of the Month!!

My name is Mariana! I’m a bookstagrammer at @bookisglee and an avid reader since I was a child. I started out as a book blogger, but decided to create an instagram dedicated to books when I discovered the bookstagram community almost two years ago. When I’m not reading, I enjoy playing with my toy poodle Pierre and chatting with my fellow bookstagrammers about their latest reads.

How long have you been part of the Bookstagram community?

I joined the community about a year and half ago!

Can you tell us a bit about your feed/style and how has it changed
over time?

I absolutely love wooden background! When I first started out, I used my balcony’s wooden floor as my backdrop. It worked really great until winter came, and I couldn’t spend that much time taking photos since it was super cold outside.

I then moved my photo corner indoor and used a tablecloth with wooden pattern as my backdrop. My photos became much brighter! I also love to use funkos and bright flowers in the photos.

I changed my theme to the current one around last Christmas. I invested in a vinyl backdrop with brown wood this time and my theme has become much warmer. I still have lots to learn and improve, and it’s so exciting to see the changes in my account everyday.

What is the silliest thing you've ever done for the sake of a photo?

It’s probably that one time when I tried to take photos for bookstagram in public. I was at a Jay Kristoff & Amie Kaufman signing, and as we waited, I asked my friend Michelle to hold up all sixteen of the books I brought along for a bookstagram photo. I’m pretty sure the people around us were all laughing haha.

When do you make time for taking photos? Do you usually plan ahead or take photos as you go (daily)?

I usually take photos after school whenever the lighting is good. Since I depend a lot on the weather for good lighting, I try to take around 6-12 photos per session and plan ahead my photos.

What type of camera do you use?

I use my ancient iPhone 5 to take most of my pictures. I feel like a dinosaur haha.

What are some of your favorite props (besides books, of course ;))?

I love the package of vintage book pages and flowers I got from Michael’s. They are super easy to work with and are perfect to fill up any blanks in the photos.

What book/series do you tend to photograph the most?

Probably Stalking Jack the Ripper series by Kerri Maniscalco! I’m a huge fan of the books and the covers are so photogenic and pretty.

Which of your photos is your absolute favorite and why?

I absolutely love the photo I took for the #bookishmap tag! Plus it looks really cool when the cinemagraph aspect kicks in.

What is the thing you love most about Bookstagramming?

I absolutely adore the bookstagram community and all the amazing friends I’ve made these past years. Everyone is so supportive and awesome!

What are a few of your favorite Bookstagram accounts?

Brenda @br.enda
Nikki @nikkiinwanderland

Jill @booknerd_reads

Christine @xenatine

Kristen @myfriendsarefiction

Bridget @darkfaerietales_

Michelle @magicalreads7

Melissa & Isabel @thereaderandthechef (you guys!!)

And the list goes on and on haha. All of them are so so talented and awesome!

Do you have any tips for new Bookstagram accounts that you wish you knew when you started?

My tip would be utilize what you already have for your bookstagram! Props are great and all, but they can be a tad pricey if you’re on a budget. I would suggest using things you have lying around in the house (for example, I once used my extra tablecloth as a backdrop haha). Plus, you don’t need expensive cameras to be a “real” bookstagrammer! You can definitely work magic with just your phone and good lighting/angles.

(Thanks again for featuring me, Melissa! I’m so honored. Sending you all the virtual hugs and cookies!!) :D

Thank YOU for stopping by YABC, Mariana! We absolutely love your gorgeous account and we cannot wait to see more of your amazing bookish photos on #bookstagram! ♥
