Bookstagrammer of the Month: Kristen of @myfriendsarefiction
Welcome to our new monthly special feature post, Bookstagrammer Of The Month!
Each month we will be interviewing a different Bookstagrammer (Book lover/photographer on Instagram) who will share with us a bit of their experience about the Bookstagram community!
Introducing Kristen of @myfriendsarefiction, YABC's Bookstagrammer of the Month!!
Kristen has a degree in Communications and worked in marketing for 10 years before deciding to stay home with her seven year old son. Missing the excitement of a marketing job Kristen decided to take her passion for reading to the blog world and created the site My Friends Are Fiction. She has been promoting books and authors there for four years. She started a bookstagram account in April 2016 called @myfriendsarefiction and found that combining two of her hobbies (photography and reading) was the perfect creative outlet.
1. How long have you been part of the Bookstagram community?
I started really getting into #bookstagram around April 2016. I can thank my best friend Crystal (@bookiemoji) for encouraging me to try my hand at bookish photography. I had been an active blogger for about 3 years and once I started hanging out on Instagram I became hooked.
2. Can you tell us a bit about your feed/style and how has it changed
When I first started my pics were very simple and stark. I have used the same background since the start and a lot of my props are the same but I’ve gotten so many more items my pictures are much fuller now. I tend to use a ton of flowers and I’ve recently added greenery and I’m so excited about the results.
3. What is the silliest thing you've ever done for the sake of a photo?
Well, this past May I was cleaning up my library (where I also shoot all my pictures). I stood on a chair to try to reach a top shelf and I fell
backwards and flipped. I landed on my left wrist and broke it. I’m not sure that’s silly but it was a really memorable bookstagram related incident, haha
4. When do you make time for taking photos? Do you usually plan
ahead or take photos as you go (daily)?
I plan ahead. I tend to have about 70+ pics ready to go at all times. A lot of those pics are never posted but I like having them there and prepared. I am a rep for various book boxes and companies so I have to be organized and prepared so that I represent them well.
5. What type of camera do you use?
I use a really old Canon EOS 40D. I have a background in amateur macro and nature photography so it’s the camera I got about 10 years ago to do that. I also do use my iPhone 6 at times too (those lazy times I don’t want to have to upload pics etc).
6. What are some of your favorite props (besides books, of course ;) )?
I would have to say my flowers are most used! I love using candles, clocks, greenery and butterflies too. I keep expanding my prop collection with more and more things.
7. Which of your photos is your absolute favorite and why?
Oh that’s a difficult question!! I tend to love my newest photos the most but there are a few from my start that I still really do love.
8. What is the thing you love most about Bookstagramming?
I love the people I’ve met the absolute most. I really got to know my business partner, Bridget (@darkfaerietales_) so much better after we both started bookstagramming. Now we have Storygram Tours! I’ve met some of the nicest people and I can’t imagine not chatting with them daily.
9. What are a few of your favorite Bookstagram accounts?
I’ve already mentioned @bookiemoji and @darkfaerietales_ I have soooo many accounts I absolutely love! I’m constantly amazed by eden.hammond Her rainbows are goals. @luluowlmoonbooks is an amazing talent with stacks and color. I could list about 100 people! haha
10. Do you have any tips for new Bookstagram accounts that you wish you knew when you started?
Hmmm, I’d say have fun with what you are doing! I think when an account is obviously having fun with their pictures it shows. Try to not worry about numbers as much and focus on the friends you make, the fun of expressing yourself with photography and also challenging yourself.
