O'Hare

Languages flit like hummingbirds
as passengers weave through
the terminal
their shoes small clues to the people inside them:
the CEO, confident in black polished pumps, clicks past
scrolling through details of her Detroit morning meeting
a student, shuffling by in scuffed chucks,
can almost taste his granny’s chicken pot pie now that he’s near,
an immigrant, sandals peeking out from a saffron silken sari,
scans the crowd for the sister she’s missed every day for sixteen years.
This airport, like any, is a microcosm-
a smear on the slide of humanity’s deepest desires:
connection
arrival
adventure
-Tracie Vaughn
