Meet Lauren Baratz-Logsted!

Lauren Baratz-Logsted is the author of over 30 books for adults (Vertigo), teens (The Twin’s Daughter) and children (The Sisters 8 series which she created with her husband and daughter). She’d love to dress up in period costume from the 1920s but she’d be a lot less excited about meeting zombies. Lauren lives in Danbury, CT, with her husband and daughter and cat, all of whom are writers (well, maybe not the cat).

Meet Zombie Abbey!

1920, England

And the three teenage Clarke sisters thought what they’d wear to dinner was their biggest problem…

Lady Kate, the entitled eldest.

Lady Grace, lost in the middle and wishing she were braver.
Lady Lizzy, so endlessly sunny, it’s easy to underestimate her.

Then there’s Will Harvey, the proud, to-die-for—and possibly die with!—stable boy; Daniel Murray, the resourceful second footman with a secret; Raymond Allen, the unfortunate-looking young duke; and Fanny Rogers, the unsinkable kitchen maid.

Upstairs! Downstairs! Toss in some farmers and villagers!

None of them ever expected to work together for any reason.

But none of them had ever seen anything like this.

YABC: Why Zombies in Downton Abbey? How did the idea bloom?

Some things in life are just natural go-togethers: baseball and apple pie; chocolate and peanut butter (unless you're allergic); mac and cheese. (Can you tell that it's close to lunchtime here? I'm hungry!) So naturally, one night when I was watching my beloved Downton Abbey, I thought: 'Why not add zombies?' Of course then I just had to do it, creating a Downton-like world - costumes! period piece! class structure! - into which I added, of course, zombies.

YABC:  What scene from Zombie Abbey are you most excited for readers to experience?

This is nearly impossible for me to answer...because I don't want to give the most exciting stuff away! Let's just say that some of my favorites are: 1) stepping over a dead body to go to lunch; 2) a beheading; 3) a particular kiss.

YABC: Who is your favorite character (or most fun to write about) in this novel and your favorite from Downton Abbey?

You know, I really did enjoy writing them all: from the icy bitchiness of Lady Kate to reluctant heroes to the cats - yes, there are a couple of very brief chapters from the cats' POVs! - I just had a blast all the way through. As for Downton, I think I have to go with the Dowager Countess. After all, she does get the best lines, doesn't she? ("What is a week-end?")

YABC: If you were suddenly drawn into Zombie Abbey, what would you do to survive?

Run. Hide. Befriend someone far braver. I'm a coward when it comes to zombies.

YABC: Do you have a playlist for Zombie Abbey?

Sadly, no. But now that you've brought it up, I do feel like Billy Idol's "White Wedding" has to be part of the mix. I mean, it's very badass and it does mention "shotgun." I don't see how you can have a zombie apocalypse in 1920 without a shotgun being a prime weapon of defense. And then there's "Zombie" by The Cranberries. It has absolutely nothing to do with the kind of zombies in my book, but it's also the best song ever with the word "zombie" in the title. (And now both songs will play on an endless loop in my brain for the rest of the day.)

YABC: What's your favorite piece of advice when writing paranormal/horror in historical settings?

Do your research to the best of your ability but then just enjoy yourself creating. You're bound to get some things wrong - and you'll hear about it when you do, as you should - but after more than 30 books published, I've come to realize that when I'm having a good time, there's more chance that other people will have a good time too. And that's what I want most from ZombieAbbey now that it's out in the world: for you to have a good time with it.
