Meet Will.

Will Mabbitt writes. He writes in cafes, on trains, on the toilet, and sometimes in his head when his laptop runs out of power. He lives with his family somewhere in the south of England. The Unlikely Adventures of Mabel Jones is his first book. Another one is coming soon.

Now meet Will’s book.

Have you ever picked your nose? Have you ever picked your nose and EATEN IT? Have you ever picked your nose, eaten it, and, by doing so, opened a portal to a world run by PIRATES?

Mabel Jones has.

Kidnapped, Mabel is forced to serve aboard The Feroshus Maggot with the strangest crew you’ll ever meet. And the captain—an odious wolf named Idryss Ebenezer Split—won’t let her go until she helps the pirates uncover the treasure they seek.

Mabel’s voyage takes her across the Greasy Pole of Certain Death, into the belly of a whale, and underground to a decrepit crypt. And she does it all…in pajamas!

Read on if you dare. You are promised a most unlikely adventure.

Do you remember those chapters that left you dangling over precarious precipices with nothing but words to save you? We do too!

Top Five Steps to Writing Cliff-Hanging Chapters:

1.) Think of some information to tell the reader.

2.) Don’t tell it to them yet.

3.) Set up the scene so the reader is expecting this information.

4.) Then at the last minute, just as they are expecting you to tell them…

5.)………………………

We’d like to thank Will for showing us how to write a cliff-hanging chaper!! And here is another BIG thanks for the following giveaway of The Unlikely Adventures of Mabel Jones!

  1. Sherry Hoernig says:

I honestly don’t know the answer to that question. I’ve sat here trying to think about different books I’ve read & the closest I can come to an answer is Everlost (The Night Watchmen Series Book 3) by Candace Knoebel, & that was because it’s supposed to be the last book in the series. Left me going “WHAT?!?!”

  2. Cindy says:

I think that honor goes to The Falconer by Elizabeth May, though The Key by Jennifer Anne Davis comes close, and I’ve heard that The Orphan Queen by Jodi Meadows is equally just as cliff-hangery at the end.

  3. Juliana says:

    This list is amazing! 😀

I’ve been sitting here trying to think of books that have left me hanging. Melina Marchetta’s a master at switching POVs right after leaving a massive cliff-hanger at the end of chapters (her FINNIKIN OF THE ROCK series). I definitely agree with Sherry that THE ORPHAN QUEEN had an excellent cliff-hanger at the end.

  4. bn100 says:

    skip over books with cliffhangers

  5. BookFanatic says:

The entire Mortal Instrument series. After every book there would be a cliff hanger at the end, and if that isn’t bad enough since she writes in 3rd person she switches from what other people are doing. Then she makes it interesting and makes you want to know whats going to happen then boom. Changes to another set of characters. It was horrible, although the series was amazing!

  6. Dan Denman says:

Catching Fire had a pretty good cliffhanger. Katniss was rescued by District 13, but Peta was captured by the Capitol.

  7. Cynthia says:

Lilith Saintcrow’s Jill Kismet series. The cliffhanger in book #5 Heaven’s Spite, was really the first time I’ve read one! I haven’t read another cliffhanger that can top that one.

  8. Jackeline Gonzalez says:

all of the Skinjacker trilogy books

  9. Madison says:

The biggest cliffhanger I’ve read has been in The Bone Clocks, I don’t wanna give to much detail but holy jeez I was literally incapable of putting it down.
I just HAD to figure out what happened. 😮
