Tahir's newly released debut novel, An Ember in the Ashes, is a fantasy adventure that blends some of the most beloved stories such as The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, and Game of Thrones into one thrilling read! Here at YABC, we've been obsessing over Sabaa Tahir's novel and we can't wait for everyone else to read it! Sabaa has given us a list of the top five things she could never live without, which you can find below.

But first, meet Sabaa!

Sabaa Tahir spent her childhood in the Mojave Desert, where she didn’t have cable and thus chose to entertain herself with books and radio. Her parents assured her that she wanted to become a doctor, but a brief stint working in a hospital changed her mind. Sabaa left the desert for university at 17, graduated from UCLA a few years later, and went to work for The Washington Post directly after. Five years later, she left the Post and started working on a book. If she could be anything, she’d be a space explorer, but a cool one, like Jean-Luc Picard. Sabaa is represented by Alexandra Machinist at ICM.

Now, meet Sabaa's new book!

Laia is a slave. Elias is a soldier. Neither is free.

Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.

It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

Here are the top five things Sabaa could never live without (assuming that in this scenario, her family is nearby, otherwise this entire list would be taken up by them):

1.) Something to Write With and On

I don't care what it is. Pen and paper/computer/charred stick and papyrus. Anything.

2.) Music

If you take my music away, I will rage and shout and then wither away sadly.

3.) Carmex

I have an addiciton. Seriously, it's a problem.

4.) Phone

My phone, which my husband refers to as my "boyfriend."

5.) A 40-year old African blanket named Mrorg.

It is sort of ugly, but is also an heirloom beloved by all members of my family, including the littlest ones.
