How do you kill a god?
As her father's chosen heir, eighteen-year-old Rasmira has trained her whole life to become a warrior and lead her village. But when her coming-of-age trial is sabotaged and she fails the test, her father banishes her to the monster-filled wilderness with an impossible quest: to win back her honour, she must kill the oppressive god who claims tribute from the villages each year or die trying.

YABC: What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
I love writing action-adventure, but when it came time to start thinking about another novel after Daughter of the Siren Queen, I realized I didn’t want to write any sword fights for a while. I was “swashbuckle-d” out. And then Gimli popped into my head with his battle-ax, and I realized how I wanted this book to be different. Ax battles. The world grew from there. I needed a world in which it would make sense to use axes instead of swords. Axes are heavier, harder to use, slower, and I needed a world to reflect that. So I ended up creating a roughened world. The monsters have tough exoskeletons that can only be split with an ax. The homes are made out of rock, which necessitates pickaxes. Even the fruits and vegetables have tougher husks and skins.
YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?
Probably Iric. He’s just so sassy! He likes to pretend he doesn’t care about anything, but deep down he’s a softy.
YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?
The novel! That’s usually the case with my books. I have a hard time thinking of a good title until all the material is there. And even then it’s a struggle sometimes.
YABC: What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?
I’m really proud of the underwater battle scene! I’m terrified of water beasts, and putting my characters up against one was both scary and thrilling for me.
YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?
If you look carefully, there’s a beam of light shining off the ax. I love this because even though this is a tough world full of danger, there’s still hope. It’s possible to survive and thrive.
YABC: What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2019?
Definitely the new Sarah J. Maas book! I’m excited to see what she has planned in her brand new series!
YABC: What was your favorite book in 2018?
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black! That one got me out of a reading slump. I loved how twisty it was!
YABC: What’s up next for you?
I have a brand new standalone fantasy releasing next year! I’m not allowed to say too much about it yet, but if readers enjoy the romantic plotlines in my books, I think they’ll be really excited about this new one!
YABC: Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?
Drafting is so painful! I much prefer already having words to work with. I can fix something if it’s already there, but creating new material is so much more stressful.
