Introducing Sara Raasch , YABC's Author of the Week!!

Sara Raasch has known she was destined for bookish things since the age of five, when her friends had a lemonade stand and she tagged along to sell her hand-drawn picture books too. Not much has changed since then — her friends still cock concerned eyebrows when she attempts to draw things and her enthusiasm for the written word still drives her to extreme measures. Her NYTimes bestselling SNOW LIKE ASHES trilogy is available now and her upcoming pirate fantasy, THESE REBEL WAVES, releases Summer 2018. None of those feature her hand-drawn pictures. Buy the SNOW LIKE ASHES trilogy now and preorder THESE REBEL WAVES!

Meet These Rebel Waves!

Adeluna is a soldier. Five years ago, she helped the magic-rich island of Grace Loray overthrow its oppressor, Argrid, a country ruled by religion. But adjusting to post-war life has not been easy. When an Argridian delegate vanishes during peace talks with Grace Loray's new Council, Argrid demands brutal justice—but Lu suspects something dangerous is at work.

Devereux is a pirate. As one of the outlaws called stream raiders that run rampant on Grace Loray, he scavenges the island's magic plants on the black market. But after Argrid accuses raiders of the diplomat’s abduction, Vex becomes a target. An expert navigator, Vex agrees to help Lu find the Argridian—but the truth they uncover could be deadlier than any war.

Benat is a heretic. The Crown Prince of Argrid, he harbors a secret obsession with Grace Loray’s forbidden magic. When Ben's father, the king, gives him the shocking task of overturning Argrid's fear of magic, Ben has to decide if one prince can change a devout country—or if he's building his own pyre.

As conspiracies rise, Lu, Vex, and Ben will have to decide who they really are . . . and what they are willing to become for peace.

YABC:  Which came first, the title or the novel?

The novel! The title fought us every step of the way. You should see the lists I have, spitballing ideas (that were all shot down, HA). The final title came from my publisher, and by that point I was just like "YES YES IT'S PERFECT, SOLIDIFY IT PLEASE."

YABC:  What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

Chapter Twenty-Nine. I can't get into too many specifics without spoilers, but suffice to say it makes me tear up every. single. read. It's the culmination of so many plot threads through the book, and I adore how it all came together in one perfect storm of EMOTION.

YABC:  What do you like most about the cover of the book?

SWORDS

YABC:  What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2018?

Only one?? Okay okay fine:

FURYBORN by Claire Legrand!

(and PACIFICA by Kristen Simmons)

(and THE VENGEANCE CODE by Nat McKenzie)

(and and and)

YABC:  What was your favorite book in 2017?

I read a lot of poetry last year, so I gotta say MILK AND HONEY. I have so many poems dog-eared that I refer to when I need to get in Pretty Prose mode.

YABC:  What’s up next for you?

The sequel to THESE REBEL WAVES is keeping me pretty busy (out Summer 2019), but I have a few other things in the works that I can't talk about yet...but trust me, if these things come to pass, y'all gonna be HAPPY.

YABC:  Which character gave you the most trouble when writing your latest book?

Ben. Oh my god, BEN. That kid changed his motivation every draft for the first six (SIX) drafts. I have a whole dump file of scenes that feature totally different versions of this guy, all trying to figure out who he really is and what he wants and what his place in this story was supposed to be. He fought me so much, for so long -- but I gotta admit, he might be my favorite POV character now. We always love the difficult ones, eh?

YABC:  What would you say is your superpower?

Organization. I am mad skilled at time management, cleaning, and staying on top of Stuff. Sometimes detrimentally so, haha (I often have to sit on emails for awhile so as not to freak people out with my quick turnaround times).
