Introducing Sarah Raasch, YABC's Author of the Week!!

Sara Raasch has known she was destined for bookish things since the age of five, when her friends had a lemonade stand and she tagged along to sell her hand-drawn picture books too. Not much has changed since then — her friends still cock concerned eyebrows when she attempts to draw things and her enthusiasm for the written word still drives her to extreme measures. She is the NYTimes bestselling author of the SNOW LIKE ASHES trilogy and the Stream Raiders duology. None of those feature her hand-drawn pictures.

Meet These Divided Shores!

A thrilling sequel to These Rebel Waves—full of deadly magic, double crosses, and a revolution—from Sara Raasch, the New York Times bestselling author of the Snow Like Ashes series. Perfect for fans of Shannon Hale, Leigh Bardugo, and Marissa Meyer.

As a child, Lu committed unforgivable acts to free Grace Loray from King Elazar of Argrid. Now Elazar’s plan to retake the island has surpassed her darkest fears: He’s holding her and his son, Ben, captive in an endlessly shifting prison, forcing them to make a weapon that will guarantee Elazar’s success.

Escape is impossible—unless Lu becomes the ruthless soldier she hoped never to be again.

Vex failed to save Lu and Ben—and that torments him as much as his Shaking Sickness. With the disease worsening, Vex throws himself into the rebellion against Argrid. The remaining free armies are allied with the stream raider syndicates—and getting them to cooperate will take a strength Vex thought burned on a pyre six years ago.

Imprisoned, betrayed, and heartbroken, Ben is determined to end his father’s rampage. Watching Elazar sway the minds of Grace Loray as he did those of Argrid, Ben knows he has to play his father’s game of devotion to win this war. But how can a heretic prince defeat the Pious God?

As armies clash and magic rises, Lu, Vex, and Ben will confront their pasts . . . or lose their futures forever.

YABC:  Which came first, the title or the novel?

The novel! It was actually a huge pain the butt to title this book. I sent lists and lists of ideas to my editor—the team at Harper came up with THESE REBEL WAVES, and by that time I was just so glad to have a title idea that wasn’t just “Pirate Book.” Luckily, it’s an AMAZING title!!

YABC:  Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?

Simplify, simplify, simplify. I like to overcomplicate things, but the path of least resistance is more often than not the best method for doing something.

YABC:  What do you like most about the cover of the book?

I love how the covers for THESE REBEL WAVES and THESE DIVIDED SHORES look side by side. It’s an evolution, where the details from the first book have now washed up on shore for Book 2. I adore when series covers progress!

YABC:  What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2019-2020?

Oh god, just one?? Well, I got to read an early copy of WHERE DREAMS DESCEND by Janella Angeles, and wow, wow, WOW. If you like sweepingly romantic stories/worlds/characters, this book will blow you away!

YABC:  What was your favorite book in 2019?

I absolutely adored THE DECEIVERS by Kristen Simmons. A prep school for con artists. If that pitch doesn’t hook you, I mean, COME ON.

YABC:  What’s up next for you?

I have the first book in a new duology coming out August 2020. It’s a YA fantasy about gladiators and gods and elemental magic—and I got to cowrite it with my author love, Kristen Simmons! We are so in love with this book, it’s a little frightening.

YABC:  Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?

Normally I’m quick to say REVISING because I really love making things pretty and polished, but I’m working on a new project right now, and I kind of love drafting it?? It’s new for me to like the writing part. I don’t know what’s happening.

YABC:  What would you say is your superpower?

I am the Mom Friend. I have every conceivable thing anyone will always need in my purse, I will gladly whoop anyone’s ass for my friends, and I will set you straight if you need a talkin’ to. Super Mom Friend.
