Meet Dark Breaks The Dawn!
In the first book of a duology, critically acclaimed author of the Defy trilogy, Sara B. Larson, sets the stage for her reimagining of Swan Lake—a lush romance packed with betrayal, intrigue, magic and adventure.
On her 18th birthday, Princess Evelayn of Eadrolan, the Light Kingdom, can finally access the full range of her magical powers. The light looks brighter, the air is sharper, and the energy she can draw when fighting feels almost limitless.
But while her mother, the queen, remains busy at the war front, in the Dark Kingdom of Dorjhalon, the corrupt king is plotting. King Bain wants control of both kingdoms, and his plan will fling Evelayn into the throne much sooner than she expected.
In order to defeat Bain and his sons, Evelayn will quickly have to come into her ability to shapeshift, and rely on the alluring Lord Tanvir. But not everyone is what they seem, and the balance between the Light and Dark comes at a steep price.
YABC: What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
I've wanted to do a retelling of SWAN LAKE for years, and have tried (and failed) more than once. I could never get further than a few chapters in any of the iterations before I had to admit they weren't working. But you never know when an idea you've been working on will finally blossom. In the case of DARK BREAKS THE DAWN, one fortuitous conversation with a healthcare professional, and the advice he gave me, sparked the inspiration to finally come up with Evelayn's story.
YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?
Evelayn is my favorite, as is often the case with our main characters. She's strong and fiesty, but very in control of herself, even during terrible circumstances. I wish I was more like her in many ways! But some of the other characters were really fun to write as well--especially Ceren (her relationship with Evelayn is one of my favorite I've ever written) and Lorcan. He threw me for some really unexpected and exciting loops, and ended up being a much more complex character than I'd first anticipated, which is always equal parts scary and wonderful as an author.
YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?
The idea for the book came first, but I actually came up with the title for both book 1 and 2 within days of the idea taking form. I have no idea where they came from, but I just thought them up one day and loved both of them!
YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?
The cover is absolutely stunning - and SO perfect for the story in so many ways. From the swan, to the hint of purple coloring, to the crown, and the bold strokes of red...once you read the book you'll know why it is the most amazing cover I could have ever dreamed of for DARK BREAKS THE DAWN.
YABC: What’s up next for you?
The sequel BRIGHT BURNS THE NIGHT is in the final editing stages right now and will release about the same time next year!
YABC: Which character gave you the most trouble when writing your latest book?
Definitely Lorcan! He demanded more attention than I had originally planned on giving him, and it's a good thing I listened!
YABC: Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?
It really depends on the book. Some books come out in a blaze of creative passion, the words flying from my fingers. Other books are more painstaking, and must be coerced out of my mind word by word. In the case of the first, the drafting is exhilarating and there are few feelings like that. In the case of the latter, revising is my favorite because I can go back through and see how all of my hard work and what felt so difficult at times, still came together to create a story that I love and am proud to have written.
YABC: Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?
Any cause to help with cancer research, as cancer has brought pain into my life many times. In fact, my mother-in-law is currently battling breast cancer, and I think many of my readers know DEFY was originally inspired by the loss of my cousin's husband to cancer. I've run races to raise money for cancer research, and I was privileged to be a part of a book called TRUE HEROES: A TREASURY OF MODERN DAY FAIRY TALES, where I was able to write a short story for an amazing young girl named Cami, who is a cancer survivor. I truly hope that one day they will find a cure for cancer that doesn't involve the terrible side effects of chemo, radiation, and the other treatments available to us currently.

I really the like the cover! It's pretty but a little bit creepy. The synopsis sounds fun! I'm always up for books about royalty.
I love the cover. She always have the most gorgeous covers for her books. I love re-imagining/retellings books. Can't wait to read.
Normally I don't like fantasy books, but this one sounds so interesting. I'm curious to see how the Swan Lake retelling looks. I love the cover -- it really catches the eye.
