Introducing S.J. Kincaid, YABC's Author of the Week!

S.J. Kincaid originally wanted to be an astronaut, but a dearth of mathematical skills turned her interest to science fiction instead. Her debut novel, Insignia, was shortlisted for the Waterstones prize. Its sequels, Vortex and Catalyst, have received starred reviews from Kirkus Reviews and Booklist. Her next book, The Diabolic, comes out in the Fall of 2016. She’s chronically restless and has lived in California, Alabama, New Hampshire, Oregon, Chicago, and Scotland with no signs of staying in one place anytime soon. Her debut, Insignia, came out in July of 2012, followed by its sequels Vortex and Catalyst. The Diabolic was released in the fall 2016, and The Empress will be released October 31st!

Meet The Nemesis!

In the heart-pounding conclusion to the New York Times bestselling Diabolic series, the Empire teeters on the edge of destruction as rumors spread that Nemesis is still alive.

Three years ago, Tyrus Domitrian shocked the galaxy by killing the woman he swore to love forever. The woman for whom he upended the Empire. The woman with whom he wanted to build a new and brighter future.

Now, the once-idealistic heir apparent has become the cruel Emperor Tyrus, wielding his authority with an iron fist, capable of destroying planets with a single word, controlling all technology with a simple thought. He has bent the Grandiloquy to their knees, and none has the power to stand against him.

But there is a muttering among the Excess. They say that Nemesis is not truly gone. They whisper of her shadow spotted in distant star systems. They say that Nemesis lives. That she will rise, and rally the people to topple the man who was once her truest love—and is now her fiercest enemy.

YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?

I needed six first drafts to get THE NEMESIS right! I saw six ‘first drafts’ because there were such vast reimaginings and rewrites of different elements each time that it was essentially a process of writing the book all over again. The title came around first draft number  three, when I really clarified what I wanted out of the book, what I wanted the theme to be, and of course, when I actually thought of it! That was the one that captured the momentum I wanted, but let’s just say, it had some elements that I didn’t want in the final project.

YABC: What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

Ooh, okay, I’ll avoid being too spoiler-y! But basically, I totally rewrote most of THE NEMESIS over and over, and there was one scene that came in the draft three version that I absolutely loved, but it had a very different tone and meaning the first time around. It involves Nemesis, an asteroid, and a ridiculous number of Tyrus’s troops.

YABC: Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?

I’ve learned that my writing takes time and patience to get right, but if I give it that time and patience, it will happen. I think I might avoid series for a bit, or if I don’t— write more of the series in advance. The psychological pressure of a looming deadline has not diminished for me over time the way I expected it would, which is good and bad. Good, because I still care immensely about what I put in print. Bad, because, well… Three years passed between books two and three!

YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?

I love the cover of this book, because this was the first time I’ve had a very solid idea of what I wanted it to look like, and I was a very interfering busybody throughout the process of its creation. My amazing editor, Justin Chanda, was incredibly awesome and patient with me (as he always is! One thing that makes for an amazing editor!) and S&S blew me away with the final product. I hope readers like it, too!

YABC:  What was your favorite book in 2020?

Definitely BONDS OF BRASS by Emily Skrutzkie. That book was AMAZING, another romantic, epic space adventure, and I am so bummed it came out in the middle of a pandemic, because I feel like it deserved a lot more attention!

YABC: What’s up next for you?

I am writing something very different. An absolute standalone. Still science fiction, of course! But a lot more humorous in tone, a bit like CATCH-22. I’ve spent the pandemic on it, and I’m just in love with it! Writing it has been a beautiful gift.

YABC: Which character gave you the most trouble when writing your latest book?

Depends: Which first draft? The first two drafts, it was definitely Tyrus. It’s shocking how much you can look forward to writing your previously-good guy as a bad guy, yet how much trickier it actually is in execution! In the third through fifth first drafts, it was Nemesis herself. Fifth draft mostly resolved that, and sixth first draft, everyone just fell into place for me.

YABC: Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?

DEFINITELY drafting! God, I love drafting. I love all these new, crazy ideas bubbling up, and assuming some logical form together that I never could have sat down and planned meticulously in advance. Through I like revising a lot more than I used to, because after all, that’s when you make it all truly work.

YABC: What would you say is your superpower?

My imagination, for sure. I can totally immerse myself in an inner world, and then translate some of it onto a page. It’s a superpower in the classic sense, in that it comes with a terrible, Kryptonite-like weakness: I have incredibly poor attention to detail day-to-day, and constantly zone out in the middle of other things that demand the powers of concentration.
