Meet Smoke In The Sun!
After Okami is captured in the Jukai forest, Mariko has no choice–to rescue him, she must return to Inako and face the dangers that have been waiting for her in the Heian Castle. She tricks her brother, Kenshin, and betrothed, Raiden, into thinking she was being held by the Black Clan against her will, playing the part of the dutiful bride-to-be to infiltrate the emperor’s ranks and uncover the truth behind the betrayal that almost left her dead.
With the wedding plans already underway, Mariko pretends to be consumed with her upcoming nuptials, all the while using her royal standing to peel back the layers of lies and deception surrounding the imperial court. But each secret she unfurls gives way to the next, ensnaring Mariko and Okami in a political scheme that threatens their honor, their love and the very safety of the empire.
~ Interview ~
YABC: What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
The inspiration for this duology came from my East Asian heritage. My mother’s family is from South Korea, and I wanted to write a book that brought that world to life. I love the idea of mirroring western ideas about knights, and eastern ideas about samurai. Also, I’ve always wanted to write a female character who plays in a traditional boys world and addresses those problematic stereotypes. In Flame in the Mist, and Smoke in the Sun, Mariko is still feminine but can find her own strength within.
YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?
I love the main character, Mariko. She is inspired by Hermione Granger and my amazing, brilliant younger sister. She was my absolute favorite to write.
YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?
I love the cover of Flame in the Mist. The cover was designed by Theresa Evangelista, and is absolutely gorgeous. She was able to take what I’ve written and , brilliantly, recreate it into something really emblematic. It’s not only eye-catching but honors the culture I was bringing to life.
YABC: What’s up next for you?
Smoke in the sun releases tomorrow, June 5th. I’m so excited about that. I can’t wait to share it with my fans. My tour starts tomorrow, as well. I’m so excited to be able to tour with by BFF Sabaa Tahir. I’ll be in conversation with some amazing writers, you definitely won’t want to miss it.
