Meet This Darkness Mine!!
YABC: What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
I wrote a short story for an anthology AMONG THE SHADOWS, which was inspired by an article I read about mirror therapy, which is a treatment for phantom limb syndrome. My fellow editors on the anthology, Demitria Lunetta and Kate Karyus Quinn, kept telling me there was a novel in that short story. Looks like they were right.
YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?
I loved writing my main character, Sasha. She is not a nice person. I think this is my first experience writing a truly unlikable character, and honestly it was pretty fun.
YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?
The novel, by far. It was originally titled Phantom Heart, which was the title of the short story that it was based on.
YABC: What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?
There's a scene where Sasha is coming back to consciousness after having surgery. She's extremely drugged, mentally unstable, and has gone through an invasive procedure. There's a lot of factors in the scene necessary to capture the situation - fear, pain, identity loss. I think I did a decent job.
YABC: What’s up next for you?
GIVEN TO THE EARTH, the sequel to my fantasy GIVEN TO THE SEA will be releasing in Spring of 2018, and I have another contemporary coming from Harper Collins in the Fall of 2018, about a girl lost in the Appalachian wilderness.
YABC: Which was the most difficult or emotional scene to narrate?
There's a scene when Sasha hurts herself terribly on purpose, consciously choosing to cause herself great pain, while at the same time making it seems like a logical choice. That was hard to execute correctly.
YABC: Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?
I give money consistently to a shelter near my hometown which rehabs and releases wildlife. We as humans are continuing to take their space and ruin their environment. I feel the least I can do is help patch up some of the damage that we have done.
