Meet Illusion!!

Caged by secrets all around her and haunted by mistakes that have estranged her from Eight Beaufort, Barrie Watson is desperate to break the curse that puts her family in danger—without breaking the beautiful magic that protects Watson’s Landing. To do that, she must heal the rifts that have split the families of the island apart for three hundred years, unravel the mystery of the Fire Carrier and the spirits he guards, and take control of forces so deadly and awe-inspiring they threaten to overwhelm her.

With the spirits that cursed Watson Island centuries ago awake and more dangerous than ever, she finds an unlikely ally in the haunting and enigmatic Obadiah, whose motivations and power she still can’t read—or trust. His help comes at a price, however, plunging Barrie into a deadly maze of magic and wonder, mystery and intrigue that leads through history to places she never imagined she could go.

**Praise for Illusion**

“This book was such an incredible ending to an amazing, complex, and beautiful series. I swear this series should be taught in every school. The way Martina deals with issues of prejudice, slavery, sexism, relationships, and family, while telling a story that is so unique and engrossing is awe-inspiring. I love this series, I love these characters, and I love the way this book made me think about the world and all the issues we face every day. Brilliant.”

Meet Persuasion!!

As reporters chasing rumors of a stolen shipment of Civil War gold descend on Watson Island, Barrie Watson discovers more is buried at Colesworth Place than treasure. A mysterious, magical man claims the key to the Watson and Beaufort gifts and the Colesworth curse also lies beneath the mansion, and Barrie has no option but to help him find it. While she and Eight Beaufort struggle to make sense of the escalating danger and their growing feelings for each other, Barrie must decide not only whom to trust, but which gift is more reliable—Eight’s or her own. With the fate of the founding families at stake, she has to choose between what she feels deep in her heart and what will keep her loved ones safe.

Meet Compulsion!!

Three plantations. Two wishes. One ancient curse.

Three hundred years ago, an ancient spirit cursed one of the founding families of Watson Island and gave the other two magical gifts that became compulsions. Arriving for the first time at her aunt’s plantation home, Barrie Watson finds herself haunted by the ghosts of a generations-old feud and hunted by forces she can’t see. With the help of Eight Beaufort, who seems to know what she wants before she knows herself, the last Watson heir starts to unravel her family’s twisted secrets. What she finds is dangerous: a love she never expected, a river that turns to fire at midnight, a gorgeous cousin who isn’t what she seems, and very real enemies who want both Eight and Barrie dead.

YABC:   What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
In ILLUSION, I finally get to share my inspiration for the entire trilogy with readers: the character of Eliza Watson Beaufort. She’s based on the real-life Eliza Lucas Pinckney, who at the age of seventeen at the turn of the eighteenth century ran three plantations for her absent father and founded the American indigo industry, which became the third largest economic export from the Colonies prior to the Revolutionary War. Did I mention she was a girl? Where was THAT in the history classes that I took in high school or college? I would have paid more attention. Reading about Eliza while I was researching another story, I immediately saw her as what I called the “indigo ghost”—and that brought in the sense of a shadowed history that effects people in the present, a sense of magical things happening at night when the sky is dark, a sense of a headstrong girl who succeeds through determination when things are difficult.
Coming to the United States as I did from a communist country, I was always aware of how history changes according to what the people in charge want you to know. It wasn’t really until I began to research Eliza and discovered how little we knew about the roles of the women, Native Americans, and African Americans who shaped this nation that I discovered the depth of the bias in the history we are taught in this country, even when it’s based on freedom of speech. The commonalities between the struggles of the people who history had erased inspired me to create the curses and the magic of Watson Island and helped me plant the threads of all the secrets and mysteries that carried from Eliza’s time through until the present day when Barrie is living (and trying to survive) through their dangerous aftermath.

YABC:   Who is your favorite character in the book?
There are so many, but if I have to pick only one, it’s Barrie. She’s been kicked in the teeth by her own mistakes and by the responsibilities that have landed on her lap. It would be so much easier for her to give in and give up, to hide in her room and accept defeat. But she digs deep. She discovers who she really is and that it isn’t who she wants to be. She changes. To me, that’s the definition of a hero—and I see heroes like her in so many girls who have to look within to find themselves.

YABC:   Which came first, the title or the novel?
The novel is based on the idea that history is an illusion, but it was actually my favorite bookseller who said something when we were talking about PERSUASION that made me suggest the title to my editor. The powers that be loved it, too.

YABC:   Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you’ve learned as a writer from then to now?
No matter what, you have to keep writing. Even on the days when it feels too hard.

YABC:   What do you like most about the cover of the book?
Barrie is FINALLY leaning on Eight a little and accepting the support that’s been offered to her, and he is what he’s always been a rock and a steady shoulder, but not someone who steals the lead from her. This is the best of all the beautiful covers that Regina Flath came up with, because the idea of a bridge is such a metaphor in the book. It’s what I hope that people take away from the book, the idea that we are allowing too many things to divide us, as a society, as a world, as people. We need to start building more bridges.

YABC:   What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2016?

2016 is almost over, so I’m going to go ahead and say that the books I was dying for included: MY LADY JANE, THE RAVEN KING, THREE CROWNS, AERIE, and HOLDING UP THE UNIVERSE.

YABC:   What was your favorite book in 2015?
I don’t know, I’d have to say it’s a toss up between DUMPLIN and SIX OF CROWS. Each for different reasons.

YABC:   What would you say is your superpower?
INSOMNIA. It’s the only way I manage to get enough things done.

YABC:   Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?
Literacy—reading. I run the CompulsionforReading.com program to provide books to underfunded schools, libraries, classrooms, and shelters, and I’m on the board of the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia. I feel as though when we read, we have the ability to lift ourselves up, so reading anything is crucial. But reading fiction is also important because it lets us understand and empathize with people on a deeper level. It makes us more compassionate human beings. I’m also a big supporter of preventing violence against women, so I support the Pixel Project (PixelProject.net) and other anti-violence, anti-bullying organizations every chance I get.
