Meet The Truth Lies Here!

In small town Michigan, Penny, an aspiring journalist, teams up with the nerdy boy-next-door and the town’s star quarterback to find her conspiracy theorist father after he goes missing and several other townspeople turn up dead in the woods.

The deeper she digs, the weirder things start to get. Townspeople repeat the same phrases—verbatim. Men in black suits stroll around Main Street. Chunks of her memory go missing. Pretty soon, Penny’s research leads her to the long-ago meteorite crash in Bone Lake’s woods, and she’s going to have to reconsider her definition of “real” if she wants answers. . . .

YABC:  What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

The Truth Lies Here starts out with a young Penny on a sasquatch-hunting mission with her father. My own dad didn’t write for a tabloid or have a conspiracy wall like Penny’s dad, but he did love telling me wild stories (and scaring the crap out of me, honestly). When we were camping, he would tell me all about the monster at the bottom of Lake Michigan or the headless horseman in the woods. I remember being scared out of my mind but also delighted, angry at my dad for frightening me but also proud of the way he could captivate a crowd. I think we all feel a mix of emotions when it comes to our figuring out who our parents really are as people, and I wanted to write a book that captured that truth. Plus, I’ve always wanted to write my own monster-in-the-woods story, and this was my chance!

YABC:  Who is your favorite character in the book?

My favorite character is Penny’s friend Dex, the Mulder to her Scully. I just think it’s more fun to be a believer than a cynic.

YABC:  Which came first, the title or the novel?

The novel, definitely. I had to go through lots of titles before settling on this one. Sometimes titles come easily and effortlessly. Sometimes they…don’t J

YABC:  Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?

I’ve learned that it’s worth it to keep going, even when things get hard. But that’s also a lesson I have to re-learn, over and over again.

YABC:  What do you like most about the cover of the book?

I love the cover of this book. It’s atmospheric and mysterious, and it reminds me of the cool old posters they used to make for monster movies. The illustrator, Marie Bergeron, is fantastic, and I love how the cover designer, Erin Fitzsimmons, put it all together.

YABC:  What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2018-2019?

The Wicked King by Holly Black. That story really hooked me, and I can’t wait to see how things play out with Jude and Cardan.

YABC:  What was your favorite book in 2017-2018?

I’m on a big mystery kick, so I devoured Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson and One of Us is Lying by Karen McManus.

YABC:  Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?

WriteGirl in Los Angeles is an organization I love. It pairs professional female writers with teen girls from underserved areas in LA and focuses on helping those teens find and use their own creative voices. In addition to mentorships, WriteGirl offers workshops on everything from fiction to journalism to songwriting, and it’s a very powerful, inclusive organization that I’m proud to be a part of.
