Meet Wild Savage Stars!

Inspired by the legend of Tristan and Iseult, Wild Savage Stars is the spellbinding sequel to Sweet Black Waves.

Branwen has a secret powerful enough to destroy two kingdoms.

Her ancient magic led to a terrible betrayal by both her best friend, the princess Essy, and her first love, Tristan. Now this same magic is changing Branwen. Adrift in a rival court, Branwen must hide the truth from the enemy king by protecting the lovers who broke her heart―and finds herself considering a darker path.

Not everyone wants the alliance with Branwen’s kingdom to succeed―peace is balanced on a knife’s edge, and her only chance may be to embrace the darkness within…

~ Author Chat ~

YABC:  Who is your favorite character in the book?

My favorite character is still my heroine, Branwen in all of her fierce and flawed complexity. But there are two new female mentors she meets in the sequel who are badasses: Queen Verica, Tristan’s grandmother, and the Wise Damsel, a skilled healer. They both challenge Branwen’s worldview in different ways and provide some much needed tough love.

YABC:  Which came first, the title or the novel?

Since Wild Savage Stars is the second book in the Sweet Black Waves trilogy, I knew it needed to be written! However, the title was decided pretty early on in the drafting process and helped shape certain elements of the book. One of the key themes that I brought up in the first book is that of luck versus fate, and the devastating loss that Branwen experiences at the end of Sweet Black Waves pushes this to the forefront of her mind. Was her destiny truly written in the stars? If it was, then at the opening of the sequel, she feels they must be pretty savage. You’ll have to read the sequel to make up your own mind!

YABC:  Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?

In terms of craft, the most important lesson I’ve learned is how to incorporate critiques on early drafts while staying true to my own vision. No matter what, your story is still your story and it needs to reflect your heart.

YABC:  What do you like most about the cover of the book?

I love how dark and atmospheric it is, as well as the ambiguity of whether the woman is in a forest or underwater. It’s absolutely perfect and emblematic of my heroine’s emotional state in the novel.

YABC:  What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2019?

So many! Especially Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim, Color Me In by Natasha Díaz, The Downstairs Girl by Stacey Lee, and The Tenth Girl by Sara Faring.

YABC:  What was your favorite book in 2018?

The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker. It’s a retelling of the major episodes of the Iliad from the point of view of Briseis, a woman taken captive by Achilles. It’s a true masterpiece.

YABC:  Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?

Definitely drafting. When I get into the flow, listening to my music and drinking coffee, I can write for three or four hours without noticing time pass. It’s the best feeling in the world.

YABC:  What would you say is your superpower?

         Research, research, research!
