Welcome to our weekly special feature post, Author Of The Week!!

Each week we will be interviewing a different YA author and highlighting their upcoming release!

We will also be hosting a giveaway of the book we are highlighting!!

Introducing Kendare Blake, YABC's Author of the Week!!

Kendare Blake is the author of several novels and short stories, most of which you can find information about via the links above. Her work is sort of dark, always violent, and features passages describing food from when she writes while hungry. She was born in July (for those of you doing book reports) in Seoul, South Korea, but doesn’t speak a lick of Korean, as she was packed off at a very early age to her adoptive parents in the United States. That might be just an excuse, though, as she is pretty bad at learning foreign languages. She enjoys the work of Milan Kundera, Caitlin R Kiernan, Bret Easton Ellis, Richard Linklater, and the late, great Michael Jackson, I mean, come on, he gave us Thriller.
She lives and writes in Kent, Washington, with her husband, their cat son Tyrion Cattister, red Doberman dog son Obi-Dog Kenobi, rottie mix dog daughter Agent Scully, and naked sphynx cat son Armpit McGee.

Meet One Dark Throne!

The battle for the crown has begun, and the unforgettable events of the Quickening have left a mark on each of the three sisters. Katharine, once the weak and feeble queen, is curiously stronger than ever before. Arsinoe has discovered a secret about her gift which could be her salvation, or her undoing. And powerful Mirabella, believing that Arsinoe has betrayed her, is finally ready to fight.

As time runs out on the Ascension Year, the triplets face attacks that willmake them question their destinies and their paths to the throne. Friends and foes alike are forcingtheirhands, pushing them toward a shocking outcome that forever changes everyone involved.

Picking up where the New York Times bestselling Three Dark Crowns left off, One Dark Throne continues with higher stakes, jaw-dropping twists, and an ending readers will never see coming.

YABC:  Which came first, the title or the novel?

The title. It was titled shortly after we changed the title of the first book to THREE DARK CROWNS. For a while we bandied about One Sinister Something, but in the end decided to stay with the Number Dark Something format. ONE DARK THRONE. I also suggested Zero Dark Thirty, but apparently that's already taken. Plus I guess that's actually Number Dark Number.

YABC:   What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

I really love the animal-infused humor. This series is a fairly dark story to tell, with pretty serious themes, so it was a lot of fun for me to impart some levity through the interactions of people with animals and familiars. There's a scene where Billy gets a chicken "familiar" that I enjoyed a lot. And a lot of Arsinoe getting unceremoniously beat up or carried by animals. Animals have always brightened my day, so it seems fitting that they would be the ones to do it in these books.

YABC:   Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?

Gad, I've learned so many things. Tips and tricks. Real, writerly stuff that escapes me right now. But to be honest, it feels like I know nothing. I will perpetually be Jon Snow, in this world. In my other spheres of life, I can actually be sort of a know-it-all, a little bossy, but when it comes to writing, I'm fully aware that I'm a wide-eyed moron. There's always something else to learn. Something else to know. Questions multiply faster than answers.

But, there is one thing I have learned since becoming an author: How to hug. I hug people now. Before my books were published, I was very much like the David Spade llama in The Emperor's New Groove. NO TOUCHY. Now I'm more likely to go for the hug than the handshake. I think I scare people.

YABC:    What do you like most about the cover of the book?

Those sweet little snakes!!!

YABC:   What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2017?

Um, so many. Leigh Bardugo's Wonder Woman WARBRINGER, Marie Lu's WARCROSS, Marissa Meyer's RENEGADES, but can I take just a moment to scream about PHILIP PULLMAN'S NEXT LYRA BOOK?!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!

YABC:    What’s up next for you?

Well, the Three Dark Crowns series was extended to four books, so right now I'm working on the third, which will be titled along the lines of NUMBER DARKER SOMETHING. I'm also working on assorted bonuses that will accompany the series. More to come on that! Oh wait, by the time this interview goes live, that news will have already been announced.

YABC:   What would you say is your superpower?

Hmm. Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, I guess. Or Eating Pasta. Or Putting Mayonnaise on Everything. I understand these are not great superpowers, so I capitalized them to make them seem more impressive. Did it work?

YABC:   Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?

Animal welfare. Respectful, humane, loving treatment of animals is always important to me. And the environment, mostly because of the adverse impacts environmental harm can have on our wildlife.
