Meet They Wish They Were Us!

Gossip Girl meets One of Us Is Lying with a dash of The Secret History in this slick, taut murder mystery set against the backdrop of an exclusive prep school on Long Island.

In Gold Coast, Long Island, everything from the expensive downtown shops to the manicured beaches, to the pressed uniforms of Jill Newman and her friends, looks perfect. But as Jill found out three years ago, nothing is as it seems.

Freshman year Jill's best friend, the brilliant, dazzling Shaila Arnold, was killed by her boyfriend. After that dark night on the beach, Graham confessed, the case was closed, and Jill tried to move on.

Now, it's Jill's senior year and she's determined to make it her best yet. After all, she's a senior and a Player--a member of Gold Coast Prep's exclusive, not-so-secret secret society. Senior Players have the best parties, highest grades and the admiration of the entire school. This is going to be Jill's year. She's sure of it.

But when Jill starts getting texts proclaiming Graham's innocence, her dreams of the perfect senior year start to crumble. If Graham didn't kill Shaila, who did? Jill is vows to find out, but digging deeper could mean putting her friendships, and her future, in jeopardy.

What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

I grew up on Long Island and always wanted to set a mystery there, along the rocky beaches near the North Shore. But I also wanted to write a book about power and privilege, where young women come to understand their own agency during difficult social situations that seemed to be very male-dominated. I chose to do that by creating a secret society within a private high school where tradition and exclusivity are valued above all else. In that world, the main character Jill is forced to question so many things about the world around her.

Who is your favorite character in the book?

The obvious answer is Jill because I spent so much time inside her head. But I have a real soft spot for Rachel Calloway. Her brother Graham was Shaila's boyfriend and the person everyone thought killed Shaila. Rachel and Jill team up in the most unlikely way and she acts almost as a mentor to Jill as they hold each other accountable for the ways in which they wronged each other and other girls in the Players. She and Jill form a bond that's one of the strongest in the book.

What do you like most about the cover of the book?

It's no secret that I am obsessed with the cover of THEY WISH THEY WERE US. (Shoutout to Maggie Edkins and Jessica Jenkins at Penguin Teen, who came up with the concept, and Christine Blackburne, who shot the image!) It's so striking to me because it communicates exactly what the book is about: Murder, privilege, and prep schools. I just love it.

What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2020-2021?

There are so many incredible novels coming out in the next few seasons, but I'm most excited about GROWN by Tiffany D. Jackson, K-POP CONFIDENTIAL by Stephan Lee, and SOMETHING HAPPENED TO ALI GREENLEAF by Hayley Krischer. They're all so different, but they're the books I'm still thinking about weeks after reading.

What’s up next for you?

I'm almost finished with another YA standalone thriller that is scheduled to come out summer 2021 from Razorbill. I can't say much about the story itself just yet, but I can say that it follows two sisters and that it's just as dark and twisty as THEY WISH THEY WERE US. If readers like the themes in this novel, I think they'll be quite interested in my second book, too.

Which was the most difficult or emotional scene to narrate?

Writing Shaila's death was extremely difficult and I spent a lot of time discussing it with my editor, agent, and friends who read early drafts of the book. I tried very hard to write something that would not sensationalize the violence, and would be respectful to the life that I had written for her. I was most concerned with making sure she had a voice in this story and that she was remembered as a full person beyond her final moments.

Which character gave you the most trouble when writing your latest book?

I had a really difficult time figuring out Henry, Jill's boyfriend. He went through many iterations until he finally revealed himself to me during the revision process. Turns out, he's a real softy. (No spoilers, though!)

Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?

I find revising to be a bit easier because you're already working with something that past you created—it's kind of like a little gift you left yourself. But there's something so magical about drafting, where you're spinning a story from thin air. There's no feeling quite as free as the one I get while drafting a new project.
