Author Of The Week: Chat with Janella Angeles (Where Dreams Descend)!

unnamed-1

Welcome to our weekly special feature post, Author Of The Week!!

Each week we will be interviewing a different YA author and highlighting their upcoming release!

Introducing Janella Angeles, YABC's Author of the Week!

Janella Angeles is a Filipino-American author who got her start in writing through consuming glorious amounts of fanfiction at a young age–which eventually led to penning a few of her own, and later on, creating original stories from her imagination. A lifelong lover of books, she’s lucky enough to be working in the business of publishing them on top of writing them. She currently resides in Massachusetts, where she’s most likely to be found listening to musicals on repeat and daydreaming too much for her own good. She is represented by Thao Le of the Sandra Dijkstra Literary AgencyWHERE DREAMS DESCEND, Book 1 in her debut fantasy Kingdom of Cards duology, will be out August 25, 2020 from Wednesday Books.

Meet Where Dreams Descend!

In a city covered in ice and ruin, a group of magicians face off in a daring game of magical feats to find the next headliner of the Conquering Circus, only to find themselves under the threat of an unseen danger striking behind the scenes.

As each act becomes more and more risky and the number of missing magicians piles up, three are forced to reckon with their secrets before the darkness comes for them next.

The Star: Kallia, a powerful showgirl out to prove she’s the best no matter the cost

The Master: Jack, the enigmatic keeper of the club, and more than one lie told

The Magician: Demarco, the brooding judge with a dark past he can no longer hide

Where Dreams Descend is the startling and romantic first book in Janella Angeles’ debut Kingdom of Cards fantasy duology where magic is both celebrated and feared, and no heart is left unscathed.

YABC:  Who is your favorite character in the book?

Kallia, hands down. Not only is she a spitfire, confident heroine who is unlike any character I’ve written thus far, she was also the kind of character who brought me strength as I was writing her, during a time when I needed strength the most. For that, I’ll always be grateful for her.

YABC:   Which came first, the title or the novel?

I guess the title came more immediately than the whole novel, even though that first title eventually changed which happens a lot in publishing! Initially the book was called Kingdom of Cards, and it stayed that way for a while until we decided to change it to Where Dreams Descend. Thankfully I was able to keep that initial title for the duology name!

YABC:   Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?

Keep your eyes on your own feet as you climb up the mountain—it’ll help you remember why you’re climbing in the first place. So often, writing feels more like a struggle because we keep getting distracted by those around us and the pressures that emerge. Not only can it mess with your mind and motivation, it can bruise your muse. So whenever I feel lost, I know I need to reconnect with that passion for the story and the craft, and that ultimately comes down to reconnecting with myself as a writer and returning the focus there.

YABC:   What do you like most about the cover of the book?

EVERYTHING. My cover designer and cover artist truly nailed it. But what I really love most is seeing my main character, Kallia, front and center. A big piece of her character arc is fighting for a spotlight that always feels beyond her reach, so here, it feels like she has it without a doubt. Honestly, I still get emotional seeing that she’s the star of the cover, and I know she’s very pleased about it as well.

YABC:   What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2020?

I can’t wait to get my hands on a final copy of Beyond the Ruby Veil by Mara Fitzgerald which is an amazing fantasy debut!!

YABC:  What was your favorite book in 2019?

There were so many I enjoyed, but I always keep thinking about Don’t Date Rosa Santos by Nina Moreno!

YABC:  What’s up next for you?

The sequel! And hopefully some other book ideas I’ve been itching to explore…

YABC:  Which character gave you the most trouble when writing your latest book?

Definitely Jack and Demarco—those boys have so many secrets (even from me) that writing them often felt like writing in the dark!!!

YABC:  Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?

I truly love both, but if course only when all is going well XD
