Meet Retribution Rails!

REDEMPTION IS NEVER FREE

When Reece Murphy is forcibly dragged into the Rose Riders gang  because of a mysterious gold coin in his possession, he vows to find the man who gave him the piece and turn him over to the gang in exchange for freedom. Never does he expect a lead to come from an aspiring female journalist. But when Reece's path crosses with Charlotte Vaughn after a botched train robbery and she mentions a promising rumor about a gunslinger from Prescott, it becomes apparent that she will be his ticket to freedom—or a noose. As the two manipulate each other for their own ends, past secrets are unearthed, reviving a decade-old quest for revenge that may be impossible to settle.

In this thrilling companion to Vengeance Road, dangerous alliances are formed, old friends meet new enemies, and the West is wilder than ever.

YABC:  What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

RETRIBUTION RAILS is a companion novel to my 2015 western, VENGEANCE ROAD. It's set ten years later, and while it has new main characters, much of it was still inspired by VR. VR was a book about revenge—the journey of revenge, the consequences of getting it. Kate, my main character in VR, wrongs people to get her own version of justice and I started thinking about those wronged individuals and the revenge they might want. This gave me the spark for Reece Murphy, one of the two narrators in RR. Reece is an unwilling member of a gang whose leader wants revenge against Kate. Everything comes full circle. ;)

YABC:  Which came first, the title or the novel?

Title! I already had the format of VENGEANCE ROAD to work from and RETRIBUTION RAILS popped into my head before I even had a plot outlined.

YABC:  What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

Can I cheat and say the entire final climax? It was like assembling a very complicated puzzle and because of the dual narration of the book, flipping back and forth between the two POVs while maintaining tensions and moving the plot along appropriately was a challenge. I'm so proud of how those scenes came out though!

YABC:  Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?

Keep your eyes on your own paper (aka: don't play the comparison game). Only you can write the book you're writing, so keep at it, make it the best story you can, then move on to the next project.

YABC:  What do you like most about the cover of the book?

I love everything about my covers for VR and RR, but I especially love how RR stands on its own. It's clearly a part of the same series/world, but the blue tones (compared to the golds from VR) really make it pop. And I love how it plays with framing. The pistols framed the top of VR but with RR, the gallows and the rail frame the art from opposite corners. Teagan White, the illustrator who worked on both covers, is insanely talented.

YABC:  What was your favorite book in 2017?

THE GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO VICE AND VIRTUE by Mackenzi Lee. It's the eighteenth century road trip romp you didn't know you needed. I loved it so much, I blurbed it.

YABC:  What’s up next for you?

I have CONTAGION out 7/24/18 from HarperTeen, which is the first in a sci-fi thriller duology. You can see the cover and learn more about the book in this interview

YABC:  Which character gave you the most trouble when writing your latest book?

Charlotte, the second narrator of RR, gave me so. much. trouble. She was such a contrast to Kate (VR's protagonist) who came to me easily. Charlotte is very proud and sees the world in black and white. This makes her a little insufferable, and it took me awhile to figure out how to make her sympathetic, too. She's crafty and cunning and driven, but it wasn't until I fleshed out her family backstory (and her motive to help her mother out of a bad situation) that things really fell into place.
