Introducing Erin Bowman , YABC's Author of the Week!!

Erin Bowman used to tell stories visually as a web designer. Now a full-time writer, she relies solely on words. She lives in New Hampshire with her family, and when not writing she can often be found hiking, commenting on good typography, and obsessing over all things Harry Potter. Erin is the author of the Taken trilogy, Vengeance Road, Retribution Rails, and Contagion.

Meet Contagion!

After receiving a distress call from a drill team on a distant planet, a skeleton crew is sent into deep space to perform a standard search-and-rescue mission.

When they arrive, they find the planet littered with the remains of the project—including its members’ dead bodies. As they try to piece together what could have possibly decimated an entire project, they discover that some things are best left buried—and some monsters are only too ready to awaken.

~ Interview ~

YABC:  What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

CONTAGION is my first novel inspired by a dream. (Actually, it was more of a nightmare.) In this dream, I was part of a crew that had landed on a supposedly uninhabitable planet. We'd just locked our mechanic in a medbay because he was acting strangely. Through the medbay door, we watched him claw at the skin on his face and transform into...something not entirely human. This super disturbing (and super graphic) dream became the story kernel that fueled the rest of the book.

YABC:  Who is your favorite character in the book?

Ooh, this is hard because the book has an ensemble cast that was really fun to write. But I'm going to say Nova, the pilot, because she surprised me the most. Initially she was going to have a fairly small role, but I fell in love with her during my first draft. She kept doing surprising things and showing depth I didn't realize she had. By the end of revisions she'd morphed into a major player, and I'm so glad for it.

YABC:  Which came first, the title or the novel?

Definitely the novel, or at least the idea for it. I started playing with what would become CONTAGION way back in 2012. By 2015 I had a first draft but it only had a working title of ACHLYS, and it later sold with the title DARK PLANET. It was ultimately renamed CONTAGION in late 2016.

YABC:  What do you like most about the cover of the book?

I love how dark, eerie, and ominous the cover feels. It matches the tone of the book perfectly.

YABC:  What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2018?

THE LADY'S GUIDE TO PETTICOATS AND PIRACY. (I loved GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE so very much and can't wait for this companion novel!)

YABC:   What was your favorite book in 2017-2018?

I've adored almost everything I've picked up recently. This is so hard! LONG WAY DOWN by Jason Reynolds and FAR FROM THE TREE by Robin Benway stand out to me though. I've been thinking about them long after the final page.

YABC:     What’s up next for you?

I'm currently working on the sequel to CONTAGION, which will be out summer 2019. After that, I'm not sure! I'm currently working on a new book idea that I'm very excited about, so maybe that will turn into my next contracted project. (Cross your fingers for me.)

YABC:  Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?

The ACLU [aclu.org] and, most recently, RAICES [raicestexas.org] and the Florence Project [firrp.org]
