Meet The Bone Charmer!
On the day of Saskia’s kenning―a special bone reading that determines the apprenticeships of all seventeen-year-olds―her worst fear comes true. She receives an assignment to train as a Bone Charmer, a seer, like her mother.
Saskia knows her mother saw multiple paths for her, yet chose the one she knew Saskia wouldn’t want. Their argument leads to a fracture in one of the bones, with the devastating result of splitting Saskia’s future.
Now she will live her two potential paths simultaneously: one where she’s forced to confront her magic, and one where she tries to run from it. But when both paths become entangled in the plot of a rogue Charmer, Saskia learns that no future is safe, and some choices have unimaginable consequences. Only one future can survive. And Saskia’s life is in danger in both.

YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?
Definitely the main character, Saskia. Because of the way the novel is structured, I actually got to write her story twice, and I grew very attached to her. Readers will notice that Saskia is slightly different in her two realities. I loved playing with the idea that our experiences and the people we encounter shape us in different ways.
YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?
Definitely the novel—or at least the idea for the novel, along with the first three chapters. My agent actually suggested calling the book The Bone Charmer at the proposal stage. Originally, I had a different working title, which actually ended up working better for the sequel.
YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?
I adore this book cover! It was designed by Kylie Alexander and illustrated by Mina Price. They did a beautiful job capturing the two timelines, as well as the tone and theme of the book. I especially love the bone frames around the two portraits. Such a clever, well-executed idea!
YABC: What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2019?
Can I cheat and give a 2020 release? (Though it’s a January one, so it’s just barely out of 2019). I can’t wait for Holly Black’s The Queen of Nothing. It’s the third and final book in her The Folk of the Air Trilogy. I love this series—I tore through the first two books in a way that reminded me of reading as a child. If you haven’t read them, start with The Cruel Prince. So good!
YABC: What was your favorite book in 2018?
I loved Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor. She has such a gift for both poetic prose and gripping plots, which make her books impossible to put down.
YABC: What’s up next for you?
I’m hard at work editing the sequel to The Bone Charmer, and then I’m excited to dive into drafting a new fantasy. It’s something that’s been percolating at the back of my mind for a while.
YABC: Which was the most difficult or emotional scene to narrate?
I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll be vague, but there’s a scene at the end of the book that made me tear up while writing it, and then it made me emotional again during every round of edits. I hope readers have the same experience.
YABC: What would you say is your superpower?
Is worrying a superpower? Because if it is, I’m going to rule the world!
