Introducing Adrienne Young, YABC's Author of the Week!!
Adrienne Young is a born and bred Texan turned California girl. She is a foodie with a deep love of history and travel and a shameless addiction to coffee. When she’s not writing, you can find her on her yoga mat, scouring antique fairs for old books, sipping wine over long dinners, or disappearing into her favorite art museums. She lives with her documentary filmmaker husband and their four little wildlings beneath the West Coast sun.
Adrienne is the author of the New York Times bestseller Sky in the Deep and The Girl the Sea Gave Back.
Meet The Girl The Sea Gave Back!
From Adrienne Young, New York Times bestselling author of Sky in the Deep, comes her new gut-wrenching epic The Girl the Sea Gave Back.
For as long as she can remember, Tova has lived among the Svell, the people who found her washed ashore as a child and use her for her gift as a Truthtongue. Her own home and clan are long-faded memories, but the sacred symbols and staves inked over every inch of her skin mark her as one who can cast the rune stones and see into the future. She has found a fragile place among those who fear her, but when two clans to the east bury their age-old blood feud and join together as one, her world is dangerously close to collapse.
For the first time in generations, the leaders of the Svell are divided. Should they maintain peace or go to war with the allied clans to protect their newfound power? And when their chieftain looks to Tova to cast the stones, she sets into motion a series of events that will not only change the landscape of the mainland forever but will give her something she believed she could never have again—a home.

YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?
Writing Halvard as a man was really fun for me. In SKY IN THE DEEP, he is only eight years old and he plays an important role in the main character's inner journey. He was a total surprise when I was writing the book, and I knew he would play a major role in THE GIRL THE SEA GAVE BACK. It was cool to explore him from a different angle and figure out who he is ten years after the events of SKY.
YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?
In a way, the title came first for this book. I had a very vague idea about Tova's story and decided on the title long before the plot really came into focus. I was really attached to THE GIRL THE SEA GAVE BACK so I'm really happy that it all came together.
YABC: What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?
I love the ending scene, and it took shape in my mind when I was writing the first few chapters of the book. I don't want to spoil anything, but Tova casting the stones, under those circumstances, was the full-circle moment for her character and by the time I got to the last chapter, I was so excited to write it.
YABC: Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?
By far the most important thing I've learned is really understanding my own creative process. I didn't realize how much time ideas need to develop for me. Inspiration strikes, but unless the story has time to marinate, it's really hard to get it on the page. Now, I approach a new story with that in mind and give myself a lot of space and time to let my subconscious work on an idea before I pressure myself to start writing it. It has made a huge difference in my level of confidence as a storyteller when I start typing that first chapter.
YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?
I am so in love with the cover of THE GIRL THE SEA GAVE BACK! The designer, Kerri Resnick, did an amazing job and she was also the creator of the cover for SKY IN THE DEEP. I think my favorite thing about this design is the effect on the water. The hues of blue and the splashy gloss make the water come alive and it almost moves when you're holding the book in your hands. I feel like I've hit the book cover lottery twice now.
YABC: What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2019?
Like everyone else, I cannot wait to get my copy of NINTH HOUSE by Leigh Bardugo and I'm also really excited to read the conclusion of Holly Black's THE FOLK OF THE AIR series, QUEEN OF NOTHING.
YABC: What was your favorite book in 2018?
THE WICKED DEEP by Shea Earnshaw was a favorite of mine last year. It's super atmospheric and witchy, two of my favorite things.
YABC: What’s up next for you?
I just finished revisions on my next book, FABLE. It's an all-new YA fantasy duology coming from Wednesday Books. I am so excited for readers to get their hands on this book. It's been so fun to work on and I have no doubt that lovers of SKY and SEA will love FABLE too.
YABC: Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?
I have always preferred drafting. I love the swept-away feeling of being lost in the drafting process, and the knowledge that you don't know what's going to happen. The story really starts to take on a life of its own and I that moment is my favorite moment in storytelling.
YABC: What would you say is your superpower?
I'm really good at making and drinking coffee. Like, an expert.
YABC: Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?
I am really passionate about environmentalism and doing our part to lower our impact on this beautiful planet, as well as women's rights and our cultural beauty and body representation.
